I used to use plain muslim, or a solid that complimented the quilt top, but since watching Eleanor, I now use all the left over fabrics and piece them to make my back. That way, I get rid of all the loose scraps, and can purchase more fabric.
I have a book that shows you how to take your favorite block and enlarge it so that you can use for the backing. Now the quilt back looks almost as good as the front.

grammy, the Minkee is 60" wide, so you won't need as much. I didn't try it on my longarm - I mean, I did quilt it on the longarm, but not in the patches that were Minkee. The thing that I liked the least about it was that it flaked all over the place - had to keep a vacuum handy to clean up the mess. But I sure do like the way it feels.

Hi quiltcreator...thanks for the info on the Minkee. I hope it does OK on my longarm. Just plan to do a large meander. Think I will put in a real thin thermo batting to help stabelize it a little more. Hope I can get a good color.

QC I have heard from several la quilters that minkee is a bear to work with! It's so stretchy they would never do it again.
I haven't tried it myself.

As I said, I didn't actually quilt on the Minkee. I just had patches of it in the quilt and the rest of it was cotton, where I did my quilting. The back was not Minkee. So I did not have any problems with it stretching while on the la, also did not have any worries about making a lot of lint to clean up. I did have a mess while cutting and sewing it, because it shreds off along every cut.
I think if you had a large piece of it, such as the back, that the thermore is a good idea to stabilize it. I have put polar fleece on my la and used that very same thing in between. The top and back were both fleece and that stretches, too. But I had good luck with it and the quilting on it was beautiful, as it sinks in and becomes very dimensional - it is stunning on plain colored fleece w/no print.

I've never quilted with the thermore but it sounds like I will have to give it a try!

What is Thermore?

Thermore is a very thin, poly batting that does not stretch. It is often used in quilted garments.

I have purchased and made several quilts kits with Minkee. I love the soft, cuddly feel of it. I did not have any problem quilting it. But, I only stitched in the ditch, no actual "quilting". I think Minkee just makes a quilt so cuddly.
