I was so excited today -- bought 2 different Debbie Mumm fabrics for $2 a yard at my local WalMart. I have found some really good (and name brand) fabric at various Texas Walmarts. - lori

Sorry to say that now the Walmarts in my area are closing out their fabric dept. I don't buy my quilt fabric there but I do buy at a good Quilt Shop...My friend ordered from QIAD and loved the fabrics from them.

An easy way to get a list of quality fabric lines is to look at the on-line quilt stores (like QIAD) and sort by manufacturer. The fabric lines could then be listed in a notebook to carry with you.
Moda, Kaufman, Red Rooster, Hoffman, etc... the "bargins" are wonderful and I buy fabric when the line is being replaced with a new line. I just add it to my stash and have it when I want to use it. the new fabrics are wonderful but by the time I get to them they are "last season" anyway...
quality is important since the higher thread count maintains its shape when cutting and sewing better than the lower thread count fabrics.,,and they tolerate the seam ripper better

I ran across your discussion on the R.O.S.E. that I designed to help quilters evaluate the thread counts of their fabrics. I am really sorry that my website way overcalculates shipping costs. I adjust the shipping costs down 80% of the time. Rest assured you won't ever be charged more than $1.50 shipping for my tool if that is all that was ordered. Sorry for the frustration it caused!! I am thrilled however that people are discussing fabrics and thread counts and how it might affect your quiltmaking!

Most of the mfg of fabric make both the high end material and the lower end (like the stuff at Wal-mart, Jo-anns). You can't tell by the edge if it is good quality or not. You have better luck by feel & one of the gals on here bought a 'thread counter' which she uses to determine the number of threads per inch. Our quilting fabric is like the thread count on sheets. After you have washed, slept and enjoyed a 300 or 400 thread count sheet the 120 and 200 sheet just doesn't cut it. I buy both types of fabric, it just depends on what I am going to do with it.
