SUPPER CLUB Saturday, May 5

Post by purrfect-lady » Sat May 05, 2018 3:50 am

Good morning and happy Cinco de Mayo! Do you know what the Mexicans are celebrating today? Their victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla May 5, 1862. I had to look that up. I knew it wasn't their Independence Day (which is Sept 16th), and this year I at least remembered it was a victory of some sort! And why do Americans celebrate this date so vigorously? I imagine because it's a great excuse to drink beer! lol!

This morning we're going to the local cemetery, a mile down the road, for the annual clean-up day so it all looks spiffy for Mother's Day and memorial Day. There is no perpetual grounds care for these little community cemeteries so Families of the 'residents' do this every year and I've missed the last few years. But we'll need to scurry home, clean up, and get ready for tonite.

IRISH - I think your kitty needs extra attention if she had to go to the vet. Our Riley no longer gets shots. Our vet says in very old cats the shots side effects are more harmful than not getting the shots. But when our 'kids' get them, they, too, lay around the next day and need a little spoiling. I think your idea of pillowcases with that extra fabric is great! GO PENGUINS!!

JANA - Is Stu home for the summer already?? Does he have 2 yrs of college behind him now? Time goes so quickly. What's next after Sunflowers? Alec's jacket will say "Chef Alec" on it. Tina has been gracious enough to agree to make me labels to applique to the jacket and apron I also plan to make. They will be white but I got some orange bias tape to add a bit of trim because he LOVES orange and he loves making a bit of a statement. Years ago i made him a chef's jacket and hat but all in orange. He loved it! But now he has to be a professional, so white it is with just a touch of orange. Though come to think of it, I often see (on TV) chefs dressed in black, too. Black and orange would be a great combo, too, and he'd be all ready for Halloween cooking, which he loves!

BECCA - your mom sounds like she and my mom would have been great friends! If they could have found the time to visit! I am so sorry that your mom lost children though. That would be the hardest hill of all to climb.

PAM - thank you for the sweet comments on my "mom commentary". I felt I got carried away but let it stand. After all, it's Mom Season! Sounds like you and your mom have a wonderful relationship! Such a blessing! And I'm with your hubby! Raw meat kind of gives me the gags, too. I cook and eat it, but it's just not my thing. And in nursing school, after 'body lab', I couldn't eat meat of any kind for 2 whole years!

Tonite we have two couples coming to celebrate C-d-M. Bill is making steak fajitas and I'm doing "capirotada", a Mexican bread pudding with apples and cheese in it. I've never made it before, but it's in my Mexican Cookbook under 'desserts' and I have all the ingredients. Our guests are bringing appetizers, taco salad, and Mexican beer. (I told you! Ole'!!). And I think I'll also heat up some refried beans, too. I love them. And we might have a campfire after supper. It should be a good evening for it if the weather holds.

What's the story at your house for tonite?

Good morning. I am coming on early, today. Dan is doing laundry and we are going to work on the trees and bushes, today. We need to dig up the septic and have the honey dippers come.

Supper, tonight will include a nice salad with funflower seeds and boiled eggs, and maybe a broccoli salad, too. Everybody have a wonderful cinco de mayo!

Good afternoon from warm but looking like rain, SW. Pa...We had a hard/bad storm last night and rain in the forecast for the next few days...Oh well, grass and weeds are loving it!

Mary, I did not know why the Mexicans were celebrating....I think we're in the dark in this part of the country, but in the last few years, Mexican food is really gaining...And I can truly say, I've never had authentic Mexican food...Kathy did have something when we were out there but it was too hot for my delicate tongue, lol...And speaking of Kathy, she some how broke a couple bones in her foot and was told not to use it, right! She did have a call bell but after the 1st day, she thinks Tim hid it.....BUT, as for staying off the foot, she's headed to Vegas tomorrow to teach....Kids! AND she did tell me, Cari's doctor told her she needs to eat more and put on more weight....(Darn, doctor never told me that!) But, she's doing very well and baby girl is healthy....
And my BabyGirl still has the need to be pampered...I have a feeling she is carrying this "shot thing" just a bit far...In fact, I don't even think she knew she got a shot...But, that's OK, I'm here to serve...AND I also don't believe in all those other shots for my cats...My Persian almost died from a shot and I said, never again...They never go out and have regular vet checks so they are fine...If I ever take them to Florida, then I might have to break down....

Becca, Wedding is getting closer and closer, so exciting...I'm with you in the meat department...The kids often tease me about not wanting a hamburger because it tastes like meat, duh! BUT, give me a cheap hot dog smothered in cheap sauerkraut and I'm in heaven, especially if it's at a street fair and you eat it sitting on the curb,lol....You make me hungry with your Pimento cheese, haven't had that in years.....

After reading about the Moms, it really did get me thinking...So many things came back and had me thinking of how I hadn't given her credit for what all she did...My Dad passed away when my Mom was 38 and she had taken care of him for over a year...He was diagnosed with a (at the time, 1953) rare type of cancer and Mom took him to Memorial Hospital in NY for surgeries until they had to amputate his leg...She turned our dining room into a hospital room and she never left that room, tending to all his needs..She slept in a chair by his bed for 4 months until he passed on Aug. 8, 1954...Growing up, I mostly saw my parents as hard workers but when I think of how Mom was so devoted, there was a lot of love between them....I think loosing Jim has made me realize more about my own parents.....OK, enough of that.....

Today is big time ugly day and I probably won't get half done...I did laundry and cleaned upstairs but downstairs needs vacuumed (but the cats are napping).....I have the porches half done but I'm waiting to get my power washer and then I (or Nick) can have fun...Hopefully, next week, I can really get out and play in the dirt.....

As for dinner, I have potatoes baking...Every once in awhile, I get a hankering for a good baked potato, just like Jana makes them....

Hope you all are having a super Saturday....

Happy eating...........

Penguins are playing tonight and hopefully, we'll go 1 up on the Capitals....I really made headway on the baby afghan during the last game so maybe tonight I'll be able to finish it.....

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Lots of celebrating down here by the border! I'm not sure if we'll be going to anything because Frankie is sick with a head cold. I'll be spending some time outside in my yards. Duncan and Rosie are at the groomer. We had a bunch last night, Holly and the kids and Dad for supper. I think or weekend will just be quiet at home.
Supper tonight will be leftovers. I gotta grocery shop soon.

Good afternoon!

We will be doing tacos in celebration of Cinco de Mayo.

Been working out in the yard. Cleared the weeds from beside the garage to create a flower bed. It will mostly perennials and raised, so I can do a bit of tbe work in it. Also cleaned the grill and deck for this season. Now to go and find dome furniture for out here. Ethan has been a help. He loved washing things for me with the hose - what little boy doesn't hoses and water!

Mary - yes, Stu finished up last week. This is just his first year of college. He did a two year mission before starting college. Kate walked across the stage on Friday morning and tonight we are having cake and ice cream at their house to celebtate. Hands on my Little Lila!

Well, time to scoot off,

Enjoy,
Jana

Good late afternoon/evening! It’s just been a regular, busy Saturday. Mom and I had salads from Taco Mayo—does that count for celebrating Cinco de Mayo?

I don’t have much to talk about other than taking care of Choc and walking to see her (and riding part of the time as well.) We are 84 this afternoon, sunny, and it’s HOT! I guess we went from a freezing spring to summer overnight.

Mary—how neat to do the cemetery clean up! DS3 used to be in charge of all the burials (opening and closing and scheduling) of the two township cemeteries. He contracted and scheduled mowers and did much of the maintenance himself (fixing broken stones, etc.). I’m not sure he’s still the one they call. Single plots in these cemeteries cost $25. Isn’t that a bargain! I’m not sure what they charge for opening.

The chef’s coat and hat sound neat! I like the white ones and the black ones. And, you did have a great mom tribute!

Jana—I’ll be having tortilla soup for my supper.

Tina—after last night’s dinner, you earned a quiet evening!

Irish—I do love Mexican food! It’s quite popular around these parts. Parsons had a big Mexican community for years—brought in by the Katy Railroad in their heyday. I don’t blame you for not getting shots any more. The hooligans have to get theirs and worm pills… too much to get them or to get into around the farm! Give me sauerkraut any time! The kids make venison brats, and I only want them with sauerkraut and mustard—yummy! What a lovely tribute to your parents, too!!!

Becca—I was over at Ava’s yesterday after her “mom” was home. She’s doing a bunch of signs for the wedding and things for the shower tomorrow. She’s a bride’s maid, and she and the maid of honor are hostessing. She’s also doing a lot for the reception to be held at DS1’s farm.

Pam—a husband who does laundry! WOW!!! Linda’s husband cooks! Wherever did I go wrong??? Even Mary’s husband cooks when they camp. Good luck with the septic! I like funflower seeds!!! So do all my birds!!! (Sorry, just couldn’t resist!)

I’m going to walk out and see where DH is. He should be coming back for dinner soon. He’ll get some little meatballs and asparagus. I’m going for soup—even in the heat!

Bon appétit!
