Best advice - read and thoroughly understand the pattern you are making before you cut anything. This saves headaches and running out of fabrics.

When my friend was new to quilting, she joined my local 'quilt group' and signed up to make a 'sampler' quilt. They made a new block each week which tackled all the 'different' styles of block that you may come up against. Perfect way to start out I think.
Also look at some of Eleanor Burns books, on the plus side of this she has all of her video's of each series here on the website which run with the books (or is it the other way around?) haha...
