Grandma and Quilting

found this card from my grandma she sent me many years ago..I loved her so much...This one that taught me to quilt was my Mamma's mamma. A poster put on about wanting to make a quilt like her Grandma..I believe if your grandma taught you there will always be a part of Grandma in your quilt...kinda like Eleanor Burns and the Double T quilt I made awhile back..I cannot look at that top without thing of Grandma..who passed down that indigo to me..Mamma who always encouraged me and loved that top...and Eleanor Burns because if she had not taught me how to make those gazzilion flying geese with that fancy ruler she designed I would have NEVER made it!.....Hope you all have a story in your heart of a special person or people who have encouraged and/or taught you to quilt!...Sonya.

Beautiful tribute to your grandmother and all the quilting grandmothers down thru the ages. Brought tears as I thought of my own dear grandma.

She made so many quilts. And now I sleep under one she made especially for me many yrs ago. It was sewn on a treadle machine or by hand, made from pcs of old clothing, and every stitich was made with love. She only made the tops and each person was on their own to get it finished. My sister in New Mex and her quilting group helped me to sandwich it, pin it, and then sister and I tied it.

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful card. And thanks for the memories of my own dear grandma. She taught me so many things in life. I only hope I am able to pass a few of those things on to my own grandkids.

What a great card! How special to have such a wonderful legacy. My grandma quilted. She made me a little doll quilt in grandmother's flower garden pattern. I remember her sitting at her sewing machine. Of course my mom quilts, too. The quilting gene missed my DD, but I've been teaching my DGD to quilt, and the legacy goes on.

Great memory card, hope it goes down your family for many generations to come.. I wish I could say the same for my mother passing down the quilts.

Thank you Shirley Mae, Miriam, Ann, Lois and Scrap.. It is a special and precious card...I loved how she "signed" it! ..usually it was just "grand-maw!":)..But this was serious business! ...she was so proud of her quilts..so was Grandpa as he made a few of his own! This grandma also taught me crochet and my other grandma taught me Embroidery (lazy daisies, french knots, etc. I miss this them both so much! Mamma didn't have near as much time for so much needle arts but she did make most of my sister's and mine clothes when we were younger..and taught me machine sewing.., I MISS HER SO MUCH!..My memories of these three women are so precious! They dearly loved each other and me...and their WHOLE family. The memories you all have shared make it even more special!...Kindred spirits!...Scrap..PLEASE pass on your love of quilting...to someone...I am so happy to hear about your all's passing down or joining with friends and groups to continue this love we have of quilting! Sonya What a beautiful tribute to your Grandma & Mom.My Grandmother quilted too but I learned the hard way on my own.She died when I was very young.

What a lovely memory. Did your Grandmother design the compose the card as well? That makes the whole thing even more special.

My granddaughters are scattered all around the country, and none of them have interest in sewing and quilting. I do have one granddaughter who shares my passion for crafting. But even with her, my time is so limited when we go to visit. You, who can share in your grandchildren's lives should really count your blessings. It's wonderful to have a bonding and relationship with them. It's so precious!!!

Becca...so sorry to hear your Grandma died when you were young...I am sure she would be overjoyed to know you taught your self...I would like to think she helped you a bit on the way looking down and watching you.. Vel, Thank you for the kind words and God bless you, also....you are so right, I do not get to see my granddaughter, Emma (she is 10) near as much as I wish I could..(or my three grandsons) I will be teaching her quilting very soon but she does know all about quilts. (so do the grandsons for that matter As far as Grandma designing the card...I just don't know that..and I'm afraid the only one who would really had known was her or mamma...and they are together with the Lord now..I have an Aunt who may know..I think I will ask.. ...I pray everyone here passes on this wonderful art of quilting!...Sonya.
