Wow what a day
Hello Everyone, Just wanted to pop in to share a little story, my granddaughter asked me to make her a little bikini for her doll. A friend of mine at work said his wife had some fabric sample pieces from her job, a costume shop, he brought them in to me. I was at first excited and decided on a bright fabric sample for this little bikini. OMG, I have never sewn on any fabric like this before, it was Shiny and Stretchy. Looked perfect for a bikini, but what a nightmare. I went and got the ballpoint needle I needed. I sat forever to get tensions and stitch set up right, but that fabric was horrible. Then I read to use tear away paper, I don't know what kind of tear away paper the lady in joann's gave me but that stuff was so stiff that when I tried to tear it off, the stitches bagged so badly that I had to take them out and do it over again. That paper went right in the trash can. LOL What I thought was going to be an hour little project took me the entire day. It does look cute but never again. And my few little fabric samples from the costume shop do not look so great to me anymore. LOLLOL My other granddaughter is asking me to make her dolly a fur coat because winter is coming. Even if I find a scrap of fur fabric somewhere, I have no idea how to sew with that so I am afraid dear dolly will have to freeze this winter LOLLOL A beginner should not tackle such feats. But I am a determined person and if I start a project, I finish it no matter what. But I don't think after the bikini, I don't want to try the coat. LOL
Well, just wanted to pop on to share my little story, needless to say, my day off to do little things for myself, zoomed by and all I accomplished was a little shiny stretchy bikini for a cabbage patch doll, but it was all worth it because I know my little granddaughter will squeal with delight when she gets the little package in the mail from "mee maw" LOL
Hope you are all having a fantastic day.

What we do for our grand kids. Look and see if they have a coat pattern or jacket pattern somewhere or on line. Just a thought. Fake fur should be easy but maybe try sewing on it first. Lol

I made doll clothes for my DGD. I made Barbie clothes for my DD. Doll clothes are more difficult than "people" clothes because of the tiny sizes. Good for you for sticking with it! Next time, if there is one, shorten your stitch length and use regular paper. It should be easier to tear away. The shorter stitch length is the trick. If you need adhesive, use washable school glue for basting and let it dry.
I'll bet the bikini is darling! Now to make some shiny exercise doll clothes with the rest of your shiny scraps... LOL!
Maybe you could make a winter coat and glue on (permanent fabric glue) a fur collar, cuffs and border around the bottom hem. I love fabric glue for attaching trims! I've also used it for mending.

Farmchick, please please don't tell my dgd about the shiny work out clothes LOLLOL I couldn't bear that little face asking for them and no way I want to tackle that. LOL And she just got her first barbie doll. I don't think I could handle that size, I told my daughter to keep quiet about those. LOL
Becca: I loved it when you said they think you are wonder woman, indeed that is the greatest part of all. LOL That is why I got involved with this bikini idea, I made her doll a little sleeper and a pair of overalls with a little shirt and a diaper to match. LOL She loved it. So when she started swimming lessons, she wanted a bikini for her doll. She told my daughter to call "mee maw" right away cause she can do it. LOLLOL They know who is the softee LOLOL great idea to find a fur coat at thrift shop to take apart for the little winter coat. As much as I dread starting such a feat, I know I will try for her. LOL Problem is, there are 7 of them and once the word gets out, they all want one. LOLLOL
Namarose: I think I might already have a coat pattern for the cabbage patch dolls. I have to search my patterns box. But when they started asking for clothes for those dolls, I got a few patterns off ebay. I just didn't want to make too much in case they changed from cabbage patch dolls to those new American Girl dolls. LOL Cabbage Patch seems to be hanging in there, they are more like real little baby dolls. Wish me luck on the coat.
I don't know how to post pictures yet. My daughter in law takes pics of my doll clothes and puts them in an album on FB. I don't know how to get them out of there. LOL
Well, hope everyone is having a great day,
Rachel

Re: Wow what a day
My DGD has American Girl dolls. She has her mom's Barbies and has added to them in quantity. I draw the line at making those little things now. The AG dolls are quite enough! My mom used to make a lot of Cabbage Patch clothes. Check out thrift stores for preemie clothes for the Cabbage Patch babies. I think they wear "real" clothes. It seems like Mom used some of my DD's preemie clothes on some of them.
The grands here all think I can mend ANYTHING no matter how badly it is ruined. I do my best. I'm Mender Woman.

Instead of a "fur" coat, think about a "quilted" coat. You could easily make a quick sandwiched piece of quilted fabric, or buy the pre quilted kind and make a really cute dolly coat.
Dolly really won't know how warm it really is, but your granddaughter will love it.
