A New Quilter !

Post by hsmomof4 » Fri Mar 07, 2014 4:25 pm

Good day Quilters,

Just started the art of quilting with my lovely daughter. It's always been something I wanted to learn to do and joyed that my daughter now shares it with me. Having a wonderful teacher always helps...a big thankyou to kho and another beautiful lady snow white :o). Also, a few of you fine ladies have been so generous to help us get a start. Pray you are all blessed for giving.

On a different note....Any tips for a beginner ?

Start simple. Means set a place for your sewing things. Sometime i just have a few minutes to sew or cut. if i have to set things up. i won't do it. Pick a simple pattern first. Work on that to the end. Or you have UFO all around. (UFO is un finished Project). Come ask is questions. Were glad to help.

Katherine

Have to come back and fix my bad spelling. lol

Welcome to quilting!!
I agree with Katherine about having a place for your sewing. When I started about 7 or 8 years ago I had to bring everything out and then put everything back. Our house is less then a 1,000 sq feet. So I had stuff everywhere. Welcome to QIAD also.

Welcome! Sandy has probably told you that there are videos available on this forum to watch. Eleanor is a wonderful teacher. She breaks everything down into easy steps so it's hard to get confused. Stop by the sew-in. Many of us gather there for coffee and chat every morning. And there's always something going on in Chit Chat.

Momof4 (name?)

Hello and welcome.

Tips for a new beginner would be start with a simple quilt and tie it. That way it is a finish product that you can enjoy right away. My first quilt 22 years ago was El's Log Cabin in a Day.
I also took a class but you have a lot of helpers so you should be fine.

My first quilt ended up in a land fill/// don't be discouraged by mistakes...we all make them,,,,take classes if you can from another quilter or a LQS/ Videos are an excellent resource if you cannot attend classes...I still watch videos for new techniques.
welcome to our wonderful group.

hsmomof4, Welcome! I would guess your name might mean: home school mom of 4?

Important things to know as a new quilter, I have one:

F.A.R.T. = Fabric Acquisition Road Trip

Have Fun with it.
