Sewing jingle bells

How do I sew jingle bells to a project and not have the sharp bell edge cut the thread???

I wonder if a bead of hot glue on the sharp edge would help? heavier thread? not sure if it will work bu tthose are the first things that popped into my head...

I have used the heavier thread made for sewing buttons on coats.
I think that a person could just hot glue the bell onto the project.
