Sewing thread

Hello everyone, I want to quilt but I am not sure what type
of thread is best to quilt with.

Most quilt instructors recommend 40 weight for most quilts.
Stay away from super cheap threads. They will cause you nothing but frustration.

If you are sewing pieces together for a quilt....I use either Connecting Threads thread (you can search for their website) or Gutermanns. For hand quilting a quilt I use the Gutermann quilt thread. Hope this helps.

I am devoted to Guttermann's as well...never jams up in my machine.

I like Mettler Silk Finish, 50 weight , 100% cotton thread. Not too linty, I feel it is a quality thread. Available from Quilt in a day or many Quilt shops.

I too feel that cheap threads are a waste of money and time. We purchase quality fabric why not use quality thread on our soon to be Heirlooms?
I have found that Gutterman is a very stiff thread and one must watch not to purchase the Polyester Gutterman. My machine does not like Gutterman at all. Because it is a stiffer product the thread does not seat well in the tension discs, thus stitches are not formed properly.

I love connecting thread for both sewing and quilting,,,it is quite linty so you need to watch that you clean out the machine with each bobbin change,,,I use a good bobbin fill in the bottom thread for piecing as it will not show in the quilt. For quilting I use a bobbin to match the backing and top to go with the top colors. If you are hand quilting use the best quality hand quilting thread you can afford.

I do not use Coats and Clark as both of my machines don't like it.

The Mettler silk finish is my favourite both for piecing and machine quilting - 50 wt. I like Aurifil products, have discovered a Superior Threads product, 100% cotton for piecing that just hides in the seams but is too light weight for quilting a throw size or larger. My machine does not take kindly to either Coats or Gutterman though, that being said, you need to clean lint regularly from your bobbin acing and underneath it when you are quilting! I have also switched almost completely to using top stitch needles for both piecing and quilting. Helps with thread choices.

I do not like the gutterman thread at all..its breaks in my machine. I use good old coats & clark cotton thread in my machine and Americana thread for my hand quilting. Some of my quilts are 30 years old and no sign of thread wear yet.
