straight of the grain

Post by rainbowjangles » Sat Feb 02, 2013 12:22 pm

I just started reading Eleanor's Still Stripping ( I plan on taking up quilting after I retire in a few months) Well it says to tear across the grain from selvage to selvage after you make a nick in the selvage. I am not having any luck doing this. The fabric will not tear. Any suggestion? Is this the only was to find the straight of the grain?

In order to start you do need to clip through the selvage. Are you clipping before you start to rip? It should tear easily.

Hi Carol I tear fabric in Paducah every year for Eleanor and I cut about a 2" cut then tear, it must be cotton fabric last year I got a piece that wasn't cotton and it wouldn't budge. don't be gentle you have to rip it fast!
