pot holder questions

I am making some pot holders for Christmas gifts. I hve the insul brite stuff for the filling. Do I need batting too?? I don't think so, but wanted to check. Thanks

My directions on the insulbrite says to add a layer of batting also. I haven't made any but I think you should.

I have a pattern that uses insulbrite only - no extra batting - there is a bottom layer of fabric the insulbrite then four layers of fabric on the top - you cut the top three layers on the bias to make chennille - I have tons of them and they all work great just as they are -

I have used fusible craft batting... and then insulbrite... it makes the pot holders just a little thicker... not so flat...

Jana, I made some of those potholders, too! Made them the same way...they were a bear to get the binding on! lol! Broke a few needles.
The chennile part made them thick, so that kind of takes the place of extra batting I guess.
I'm anxious to hear someone who has done it both ways..

Joanne - Kyna solved the problem of putting on the binding - we just sewed a ziz-zag stitch around the outside edge and then ragged that edge too - worked great!

I made some with just insulbright and they seemed way too thin. So I made another set with bottom fabric, batting, insulbright, batting and fabric. I just cross-hatch quilted them and put on binding and they seemed to work fine.

The directions on the InsulBrite wrapper say to use a layer of cotton batting to absorb the moisture of when the hot item is placed on the potholder or hot plate...............I use the cotton batting on one side of the insulbrite and it works slick.

I use batting on each side of the insulbrite for added protection and thickness. It works great this way!
