Steam Press

Does anyone use a steam press and if so I sure would like to know what you think about them and which might be the best for applique. I see Elenore using one on some of her videos but don't see any mention of any in her shop. I'm new around here (blogs) and stuff so please forgive me if I am not condicting myself properly. I too have seen El use the steam press - I think that it would be good for El's method of applique - using the interfacing to bond to the background piece - my suggestion would be to use an applique pressing sheet - they are made of teflon and nothing sticks to them - just in case a piece slips and you would have a mess on your ironing surface from the glue.

Also it would be good for pressing your blocks flat after all the piecing is done.

I did at one time have an OLD Ironrite Ironer - my Mom sold them them in the 40's - I used it to fuse letters for my son's baseball team when he played little league - it did work great.

Hi again and Thank You for the kind welcome. I really appreciate your input about the steam press. I've looked at the different ones on the internet and honestly some of them cost less than my two "R" irons put together. That probably doesn't say much for my "smarts" does it? Of course expense is a concern as well. Eleanore makes everything look so easy. I really enjoy reading what you all are doing and seeing the pictures on these forums of the beautiful work out there. Keep on keepin' on .. Quilter's Rule !!!!!!!

Hi all,

I am really stuck about getting a good iron. I purchased a Rowenta PRO-and the sole-plate gunks up right after I go through the self clean process. On ironing one item,with no starch,the iron cannot be used again.

Today, on "Egg money quilts" the iron Eleanor used looked good, but there was no name on it. Does anyone know the name?

Does anyone know the name of a very good steam/dry iron?

I've been using a Sunbeam classic iron for several years now. It has really been drip-free so far, and the shut-off on this newer model is set for 30 minutes--mine is a lot quicker.

I have a Singer Steam Press and I love it. Once all of my quilt blocks have been finished and pressed with an iron in the proccess of putting them together, I put them into the steam press and they are so wonderfully pressed flat....it is great....no comparison of pressing with an iron. Works especially good for smaller blocks with lots of seams. I have had mine a couple of years and I don't use it ALL the time, but when I do, I love having it.....got it at Hancock Fabrics. Never a problem with it....can use it with steam or dry.
