Schoolhouse Block

Post by Jmeyer4 »

Hi everyone -

Do any of you know where I can find a pattern for a welcome banner or small wall quilt that would incorporate a school house or school house block ? My daughter is a teacher and I'd like to make her a wall hanging for her new house.

Thanks very much -

I have a school house block pattern in one of my quilting books but it did not go together well. I even took the block to a quilt group I met with once a week and they could not get the dementions in the book to work. I eventually made my own pattern of the school house block and it worked very well.

You would be amazed at how easy it is to design your own. I like to add my own touch to things. (kids big picture color books help with pattern making too.) Keep things simple by starting with even numbered blocks and adding 1/2" to the side for the seam allowances- for instance a 4"x2" door cut pattern piece 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" and build your school house around that. Put as many windows as you want, chimney or on top of the roof add a bell tower and hand sew in a small charm bell for added touch.

Jackie, I made an entire schoolhouse quilt and Eleanor Burns has a book on the schoolhouse block pattern...the patterns can be a little tricky, so my recommendation would be to buy the book and just make a block.

I've make quite a few houses with my favorite pattern, Happy Scrappy Houses:

It might feel more like a schoolhouse if you make the house red. You might get some ideas from the gallery at this site to see what others have done with their house blocks.

I haven't tried these, but they look like they wouldn't be difficult.

Thank you very much for these great links. You've given me more help than I had hoped.

Now all I have to do is find the time to make it !!

Thanks everyone -
