What's your favorite quilt block pattern?

Log cabin and pioneer braid. So many different looks from just a single strip of fabric on both accounts.

My favorite block is the one my grandmother used to make the quilts for our first "big boy" bed. Grandma called it a "star" but I have seen it called "Dinner Plate". It is essentially a Double Wedding Ring pattern but with the colors in the star center rather than in the rings. The stars are divided into nine-patch and the "footballs" on the sides are plain.

I tend to like charm quilts - then I don't have to have a specific pattern for where each color belongs. My next choice would probably be a nine-patch or a four-patch.

But recently in the Send Along Swap we did the Divided Four-Patch and I've decided that it is currently my favorite block. It goes together fast and there are no triangles!

I am very drawn to the patterns that are traditionally used by Amish quiltmakers. Sunshine and Shadows and Star of Bethlehem (a.k.a. Lone Star) are my top favs. Center Diamond, Tumbling Blocks and Bars are up there too. I have a very special place in my heart for Ocean Waves since one of the first quilts my dad bought for me when I was in high school at an auction was an ocean waves. It is very pretty and I still have it and use it regularly on our bed.

I also love log cabin and courthouse steps, but you lost me when you mentioned bear paw. That is probably my least favorite. I did one, as part of a mystery quilt , and never could like it. But courthouse steps, is really cool, I think.
