Using your backing to bind your quilt
The other morning I couldn't sleep and was up watching TV at 4 am when "Quilt In A Day" came on. Eleanor was showing how you could use your backing to bind your quilt and how to miter the corners. It sounds like something I would like to try but I was not my sharpest with not much sleep so I was wondering if anyone knows if she has put this procedure in one of her books.
Thanks,
Beverly

Re: Using your backing to bind your quilt
I don't know if it's in one of her books, but I do this with fleece, minkee and some flannel backing.
I line up my ruler on the corner, at an angle, and cut off the corner making sure the ruler is 1/4" past the point of the corner. Then I take the backing, right sides together starting at the point, and keeping a 1/4" seam allowance, I sew about an inch, the width that I want my hem to be. Then I turn the corner inside out and it pull it to the front of the quilt. I then trim the edges to however much I want to tuck in, then stitch it down. I do this by machine. It not only makes a mitered corner, it eliminates bulk in the corner.
I have most of her books. I look later and see if I can find it.

I purchased the Quick Easy Mitered Binding Tool from QIAD (in the notions section, page 14). You bring the back fabric to the front, the tool helps you make the mitered corners. It's a great gadget.

Re: Using your backing to bind your quilt
It's been a while since I mitered a corner where two pieces of cloth meet. (Does that make sense?) What is the method for making sure I get it right? I know how to mitre corners for the binding, so this is not what I am asking about.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Using your backing to bind your quilt
I pretty much alwways bring my backing around for my binding. I do it the same way Evie does it.
I didn't know El had it in one of her books. Maybe QIAD could help us with which one. I would like to see how she does it. And I'm going to look into the "gadget" nanner is speaking about.
Let us know if you find out which book..................

Hi Beverly. If you want more information on this type of binding you can go wo sewinganswers.com. Go down, on the left, to quilting and you will find on that list how this is done. Good luck, Pam.
