Sewing Machine

Post by Cari09 » Wed Jul 15, 2009 6:13 pm

I am in need of a new machine. One that embroiders and quilts. I am on disability and can't afford a new one. I am wondering if anyone would have a more advanced machine than mine (Singer 5050) that they no longer need due to recent updating to a more powerful machine.

I sew mostly by hand but my Fibromyalgia tends to make it difficult at times.

Thank you
Carmen

I have a new home memory craft 6000, it doesn't do embroidery with a hoop. It works great, had it tuned up a couple of years ago, and used for maybe 5 hrs. of sewing. I have the instruction manual, all the feet, etc.. I have been contemplating selling it for a while now. Let me know if you are interested. Saw one on e-bay with a very good description. Would sell mine for less than the one on e-bay.

Cari09, I was at the Baby Lock dealership and they had a new machine called a Sophie that sews and does embroidery. It was not nearly as expensive as most of the machines. I don't know anything about the machine but they were doing a demo and I watched. Only does a 4x4 I think.

You might call some local dealers in your area and see what they have for sale in the used department. I know here they always have quite a few deals on nice used machines. Good luck.

I'd look at thrift store, and ask your relatives to look for you at thrift stores/garage sales etc.
Most of my machines have come from that. Also, try quiltingboard.com and in the classifieds section ask, people are very helpful there,(not there here isn't)
good luck!

Carmen, if you have a local Craigs list, you might put something there in the 'want ads'.

Good luck; hope you can find what you need!

Don't forget to check in pawn shops. That sounds tacky, but really, there are some good deals in some of them. Good luck. Let us know what you end up with! mary z

Be really careful when you are buying a machine on Ebay, on line or from someone, even a thrift store, yard sale. If you are going to buy one, ask if the machine can first go in for a check to see if it is ok. I used to work at the Singer store, and we got a lot of machines in for repair that people bought off line or at a yard sale, sometimes it was just an adjustment, sometimes it was a lot of money and sometimes it could not be fixed..

Call sewing machine dealers and ask to speak to whoever repairs machines or can you leave a message for him or have his number, they may have some for sale or know of where you could buy one. In the store I worked at we sold used machines, they were overhauled and in good working condition.

A lady bought a embroidery machine from online, and she ended up have to spend a lot of money to have it shipped across the state to the repair shop because the people who had it messed up something in the computer...so just be careful. I would hate to see you buy something and have it break down or not really work right.

I think a dealer is your best bet. They take ina lot of trade-ins and you usually get a 6 month guarantee.
