Pillowcases and another question

Post by momomof4 » Wed Jun 24, 2009 2:29 pm

Hi! I'm not on here much, so I always feel like I am way behind.

Are these pillowcases for the soldiers quilted or sewn? Are they like a bought pillowcase in size? My oldest is now back in the states, and I was a blue star mom for 15 months. Care packages are so much needed and wanted. Those soldiers truly get to thinking that no one remembers them. So when they get these care packages they are truly treasured and appreciated!

Now, my middle boy is autistic. We are involved in the Walk for Autism, which raises money for research. Do any of you know of a quilting pattern that is used like the one for breast cancer research? The autism logo is a puzzle-piece made up of multiple colors. I have sent a letter to the Autism Speaks org, but have not heard back from them yet. If any of you know about a pattern or a way to auction off a quilt to raise money for this cause, I would appreciate any info. You can PM me or comment back here. Thanks!

Here's a pillowcase pattern QIADLinda had posted when I had requested pillowcases for the recovering soldiers in the Lundstahl Hospital in Germany:

Sleepy Time Pillowcase

Fabric Requirements
3/4 yard Main Fabric
1/4 yard Border Band
2" Accent Strip

Cutting
Main Fabric: Pillowcase body: 27" x 41" (Trim Selvage ends only)
Border Band: 9" x 41"
Accent Band: 2" x 41"

Construction
Sew the seams with your serger if you have one, otherwise use a French Seam. To make a French Seam, place fabrics wrong sides together and sew a 1/8” seam. Turn and press on seam with right sides together, then sew a 3/8” seam. This will encase the raw edge and give a nice finish to the inside of the case.

Press accent strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Pin the folded strip to the right side of body along one 41” side, raw edges matching and sew through all layers 1/4” from edge. If your main fabric is directional, please consider which end is “up!”
Sew the side seam with serger or French Seam. Sew the bottom with serger or French Seam.
Sew the short sides of the ban right sides together with a 1/4” seam, forming a circle.
Pin the right side of the band to the wrong side of the case and sew with a 1/4” seam.
Turn under raw edge 1/2” and press. Turn to right side of case and align folded edge over top of previous stitching. Top stitch in place.

Becky, I was not aware that the symbol for Autism was the puzzle piece. I have never seen a specific pattern connecting a puzzle pattern to Autism, but here are 2 places for a pattern that is a 'puzzle'. They both are free.

This is the one I really like:

I think Fons and Porter magaine had a cute puzzle quilt a while back. I will look through my magazines. It was really darling all in primary colors and the pieces were larger and I think easy to make.

Okay, the first one didn't work, so trying again for the link for the Magic Pillowcase:

This should work. The instructions start about half way through the block of the month video. This is a really quick and easy way to make pillowcases.

*Smile*

Becky, during one of my many classes at QIAD, I was shown another way to make pillow cases in a fast and fabulous pattern.

I might see this QIAD student again tonight when I go to class there this eve, and see if she knows of a link to show here in the QIAD members of how to make this simple and mind-boggling-easy way of making them

*T* <===== hoping to report back on this subject tonight.

The pillowcases for the soldiers are sewn and in whatever fabric of your choice. They are sent to the wounded warriers all over and it is a project that is ongoing. The Blue Star Mothers continue to send packages to all troops and we are currently doing a lot of fund raisers for that purpose since we have gotten pretty depleted. But we are trying to make it a little nicer. Whatever cases you would like to do will be much appreciated. Hugs, Judy

WOW! So many possibilities.......and a BIG WHEW!!!! I was so afraid my qustion on puzzle pieces for an autism quilt to raffle off would have been one of the ones that got taken off.

I am going to go to these sites and I am also going to try the one you send me, grandma taz.

You are all the best!

Becky
