Binky Brigade

Post by judyquilts » Tue Jun 02, 2009 5:59 pm

This is something I found in Quilt Magazine. Go online to The Binky Brigade and all the info is in there. A young Air Force wife started it with her mother and it has really grown. They send small (15" square)approximately, little blankets for babies and children in the war torn areas. The children love to hold them and the small size lets babies carry them. It gives an address to send them to: The Binky Brigade, c/o Angela Parker, 4315 Hike Circle, Bellevue, NE 68123. She and her mother sew on a heart cut from old uniforms of soldiers, before they are mailed. This just sounded interesting to me and thought I would share it.

Here is the site that tells about the program and the quilts and such. Would be a great way to use up scraps since they recommended being 15 inches or so. Thank You so much for posting this information Judy. I am going to look into doing this. Ladies & Gents do you think this is something we might want to do as a group? Just a thought.

PS. The MIL of Angela Parker is a lady named Linda Parker. Not "our" Linda Parker but I thought it was neat.

Judy,

Thank you so much for this site!!! This would make a wonderful project for "El's Angels". Maybe we could get a little label by one of our wonderful label makers, copy it and put a little label in the corner of each of our "Binkys". There are even some 15 inch + patterns at Quilters Cache.

I just e-mailed a friend whose DH is in Afganistan about possibly sending in old uniform fabric for the little hearts. These would be kind of like the "Comfort squares" we made for QIAD-Linda's church during the fire storm a few years back.

Judy since you found this site & shared it with us, would you consider Hostessing it and collecting the squares sent in by us El's Angels and then sending them on to the Binky Brigade/Angela Parker? Maybe contact her before & tell her of our plan? If not, that is okay. Someone else may want to.

I re-read the info on their site and they sew the Heart patch on but I am sure we could send fabric from uniforms if we had it. We might need to ask that though. Since this is their project we would need to follow their guidelines and just donate the 15 inch squares we make. Just shooting ideas out here.

Those that don't want to donate to this group may want to start their own group and try to head that up. Since the Binky Brigade is all set up and in action, I personally thought it would be great & so easy to donate a stack to.

Love You ALL

If there is no other volunteers for this I would be glad to do a collection and send it en-mass to them. I won't be able to do anything until after mid July so we would have time.

I would hostess this one if you would like, be glad to and will mail the blankets. The size of 15" is not an unfinished square. They are to be little blankets for babies and children. It should be finished when we send them. I am so glad everyone liked this idea. Last winter my daughter and I also crochet or knitted at least 20 scarves for children in Afghanistan and they were mailed out through the Blue Star Mothers. That felt good to do and I will be doing that again. I think I saw on the "Binky Brigade" site that donations of material from uniforms is welcomed.

I'm thinking I can get my dd to send/bring down an old uniform that no one wants and then I'll be glad to donate some blankets. Did anyone decide that anyone was in charge of this coming from us?

Ah = I see that they put on the hearts themselves. Well, maybe they could use an old uniform anyway. ;-)

Judy - looking at the website - it is hard to tell if they use batting. They are pretty thin. Since it is a carry around lovey type blanket - maybe not?
