Cindyg, In this pattern, you know the center of the 9-patch will be cut into the 4 smaller squares, the 4 corner squares will not be cut at all, leaving the squares between the corner squares cut as rectangles. Just keep in mind dark, med and light fabric. So many ways to lay this out that a person wouldn't even recognize the D9P pattern. And, sure, you can start with whatever size squares for the 9-patch that you want to.
