My Design Walls - RV /portable & Home

Post by WeeOne » Sun Mar 29, 2009 3:20 pm

Here are photos of my design walls. First is my RV/portable walls. One photo shows the design wall hanging on the mirror in the RV, with part of the quilt I'm working on. The other photo shows my other design wall that I took to a Landscape class I took last year. My quilt shop has design walls made from foam board that they set up on chairs. I unrolled mine and pinned to board.

Both are made with a large foam noodle, that you can get from Wal Mart in the Toy dept. The noodle is about 3 1/4 - 3 1/2" across, so they don't bend much. I cut them to 36". Buy 1 yd. plastic table cloth material with the flannel back (try to find the heaviest you can). It is 54" or something wide. I pinned the 36" side to the noodle, then on the other 36" side I turned down an inch or two and spaced 4 buttonholes across, they don't have to be very big because I hang it on the mirror with 4 suction cup hooks. When I'm done using it, I roll it up and use 2 or 3 Velstraps, got these at Ace Hardware. They are 18" long straps with a ring on one end to run the strap thru and back to lock on itself.

This photo shows the design wall I have at home. I don't have any free wall space, so I bought 2 yds or whatever length to fit my closet doors. Again I turned down a couple inches and made buttonholes so I could hang it up with the over the door hooks. If I need in the closet, I unhook one side, fold it in half, hang it.

Lyn,
What a great idea! I am going to make one for my sewing room since I don't have room to hang one permanently, this will work just perfect! Thank you for sharing such a creative idea!

What a neat idea. Thanks for sharing. I had a large piece of felt that is supposed to be used for jigsaw puzzles. One day I decided to try laying out a small quilt on it. It stays put mostly, I can roll it up or fold it and the pieces don't move very much. At least it is something portable and doesn't take up much room for me either in my motor home. And it is a dark green so most blocks show up quite well on it and give you a good contrast.

hugs, Shirley Mae

Very creative !! I don't have room for a permanent one either. What a great solution. For my last quilt, I pinned all the blocks to a sheet and hung it on the wall over the pictures. It was a pain to have to unpin to re-arrange. Now if I can just think of a way to hang the noodles on the wall....................hmmm

Hi Lyn, Love your design wall. But your quilts are really worth drooling over. That mtn scene is so pretty. You are very talented. What a beautiful creation. Did you design it or use a pattern? Reminds me of Willow Lake where we spent the summer in Oregon.

Thank you for sharing. It proves us motorhome travelers can quilt too, we just have to think on a smaller scale. ps-caught any fish lately or just getting wet and blowing away in texas?

Hugs and happy quilting. Shirley Mae
