quilt or tie??
I have only tied the few quilts that I have made. A fellow worker who has quilted for almost 30 years said she only likes quilted quilts that they are more cozy. How do you all feel about this point?

I have to look at the quilt. I think Trip around the World lens itself very nicely to being tied as does a Log Cabin, some quilts are just fine machine quilted but there are the others that nothing would due but to have them hand quilted! I felt that way about the Dutchman's Puzzle I made and the Shakespeare in the Park. The quilt will tell you

Re: quilt or tie??
Since I am a very slow hand quilter...If it is for a grandkid who will drag it around I will tie it. If it is for me I will hand quilt it(I spoil me) If it is a gift I usually send it to my LA. If I have time I i will take it to my sis house and put it on her LA and try myself. I am still learning to LA. I aree with Vicky...what ever the quilt "tells" you.

My personal feeling as a newbie around her is that the comfort, joy and love is in the quilt and the maker not the method of joining the fabrics it was mean the most comfortwize. I have attempted a machine quilting, fair to not so fair for a first try, and just tied a lap size yellow brick road and love the way it came out. Judi made an amazing baby quilt for me and it is quilted and I love it.

How long do you leave the tied ends? I tied two one day for a baby shower and it took much longer than I had expected. I have done some where I stitched in the ditch. On a baby quilt it is not to hard to do on the regular sewing machine.
I recently finished my quilt from the birthday block swap. I did it a block at a time and I really enjoyed doing it that way. It meant a lot of hand sewing but not as hard as hand quilting as I was only sewing block seams together. I used white muslin for the back and really like the designs on the back.
I have done a few wall hangings by hand but I am not real good at getting nice even small stitches, but I love them anyway.
I have never sent on to a long armer.
I like my quilting sparce, not too dense. If there is too much quilting, they are too stiff for my liking.

Re: quilt or tie??
this reminds me of a funny story... I made tamales once with a gal who knew how to do it... I gave a dozen to my grandmother and she told me that she didn't care for them because the tail was just turned up and the top was opened.. she said "I prefer mine tied at both ends" it was the same ingreedients, the same everything... just the presentation was different...

I leave my tied ends only about 1 inch long. tie every 6 or 8 inches of quilt, it takes a long time, some times I go 10-12 inches between each one.

Tying is quicker than hand quilting but I find it isn't as relaxing. I tie quilts for children and some of my brothers, but hand quilt the ones for my sisters.

Re: quilt or tie??
I have only tried stitch in the ditch for one of my finished quilts. All the others were tied. (Of course they were all lap-size or baby quilts.) I hold the loose threads in my left hand and cut just past the first knuckle of my pointer finger (the side closer to my thumb), so they end up about 1" long, maybe 1 1/4." I've seen some others who left threads about 2" long and I thought they looked a little sloppy. But like someone else said, it's about how YOU want to do YOUR quilt that counts. I suppose the key is to be consistent in size, no matter which ever way you choose -- to tie or hand quilt.
