Yellow and purple fabrics
I recieved some flowers the other day with bright yellow roses and also shades of purples in daisys, and carnations. There is also a square or two in a quilt I purchased at a fund raiser for a really nice guy in our town, that has a few suqares with purple and yellows. I am very new at quilting and don't have much talent. I am getting all kinds of wonderful advice for Sharon and Judi. Is there a very simple pattern that I can us and encorporate these colors. I think my aunt that just moved into assisted living would love something for her new place. PLEASE keep in mind the word "simple" I am barely getting the hang of nine patch in a doll size. Thank you

Rail fence pattern is easy and fun. You can use as many different fabrcs as you like or even go scrappy.

Chrissy1, why not find a pretty floral with purple and yellow in it that you love, get some yellow and purple fabric and make a nine-patch and alternate it with an equal size block of the floral? Or like sharonkl said, a rail fence. If you've never really made a full size quilt, I'd get one of Eleanor Burn's patterns...it makes it much easier than doing it on your own..Maybe someone at QIAD could recommend one to you.

Thank you both for all the suggestions. I am going to look at the rail fence pattern as I am not real familiar with it, will contact QIAD for some guidance and also the nine patch sounds interesting. Becasue I am really thick headed about all of this, do you mean to alternate a nine patch with a solid patch with a nine patch? I had thought of taking a yellow print and a purple print of some kind with a tone on tone (hey I even know what that is now heheheheh) and doing the nine patch. But I am up for any suggestions. There is a really nice lady that I think I can do this for. She isn't a quilter so she won't notice that I really am not either.

Just do what looks good to you and really have some fun with it! It's always fun to do quilts for people who aren't quilters, all they see is the colors and pattern, and mostly they don't even notice a mistake! lol! Actually, I kind of like to see a little goof now and then on quilts...makes them seem more personal...like a "person" made it, not a machine.
Have fun!!!

You can also go to www.quilting.about.com and find all kind of patterns, lots of them very easy and they provide very detailed instructions along with pictures of each step. That is one of my favorite websites.

Re: Yellow and purple fabrics
Thanks again everyone. I am torn between the nine patch with a solid block between and the rail fence. This is going to be fun. GIven the fact that is is 7 degrees this morning, I wish it was done and ready to give. First step is figuring out the top.

I am not into blue & yellow, but awhile back I was thinking purple & yellow would be real pretty together too. If something appeals to you, then go for it & don't worry about it! We all need to listen to our own drummers when we quilt too! I have done some crazy quilts, in some people's opinion, but I almost always love how they have turned out, & if I had listen to others, or the quilt police, who seem to lurk here & there in our quilting journeys, I would never quilt the way I do now, nor would I love it so much! Good luck!

Re: Yellow and purple fabrics
My first idea when I read this was rail fence with an altranate floral, sort of both of the other two ideas combined. I made one for my sister this fall, but just did it on the diagnal (sp?) and it was sooo pretty! Fist time for rail fence for me, but the large floral print was so pretty, and that's what she loved so much anyway.
It was quite fast and easy, my favorite kind....here's the pic too...

Re: Yellow and purple fabrics
I have made a couple of the Rail Fence pattern and I really like it. Saw one the other day done in blue batiks with a smattering of a bright pink batiks - it was really pretty. It is fun to fools around with colors and fabrics, on a RF.
