Problem with RV quilt....need suggestions

Post by WeeOne » Wed Jan 28, 2009 10:57 am

The bed in the Motorhome is 70" wide & 78 1/2" long. When I designed this quilt top, I made it exactly the size of the bed, plus a half inch for final seams around edge. Sent it to my SIL to quilt on her Gammill. She did a great job! I took it down yesterday to the Motorhome to figure out how to finish the foot of the quilt, as the bed is rounded on the corners, so you don't kill yourself on a squared corner. Laid the quilt on the bed and it's not wide enough now. I measured the quilt, now it's 68" wide & 78" long. The length will work. As you can see by my photo, I plan to put a skirt around the edge. I know this is not normal, but there are two reasons: 1- For the log cabin blocks I didn't have enough center square designs to make it larger, & 2- I didn't want the quilt too heavy since I usually pull it off every night. At least that's what I did with the monster of a bed cover that came with the Motorhome. So, I came up with the skirt idea.

I have the top and sides, down two blocks, almost finished with binding. See on right side of photo. I did this because the bed is right against small night shelves and I didn't want to hassle with tucking in the extra material. I can rip the side binding back, if I need to.

OK, here's the question I'm having. Should I add a strip on each side to get back to 70". Or say to heck with it and just put the skirt on and it starts on top an inch, instead of on the edge?? I don't think the Quilt Police will visit my Motorhome, but I guess I've always thought, If your going to do something, do it right!

Thanks for any suggestions! Lyn

Oh, FYI, the corner on the left side of photo is the side that I will round to fit mattress. That's why it is pinned that way.

If you think you will feel guilty and have to explain to people who will be seeing it, I would add the amount needed to get the size to what you originally wanted. But, it is beautiful, and no explaining is needed. I know how you feel in having this to the measurement that you really wanted. The strip to be added would not take much of your time, and it might satisfy you more if you did.

I agree, is it going to bother you, sounds like it might. It would drive me crazy and since you have already put so much work into it sounds like you would be happier if you finished it the way you intended for it to be. It is beautiful, btw.

Strange idea, but consider the source (me). Leave it and make a long bolster to cover the bare spot. You could add a short extension to the side skirt so it will look like it should be that way.

I think I would add an add'l. border and then put the skirt on. If the skirt starts an inch before the edge of the bed it will look like it's too small.

First I think the quilt is beautiful. Second, I think it will make you nuts if you don't add the border. Might as well put in the extra effort

Thanks for the comments.
It just hit me....if I add to the sides, I will also have to add to the backing and batting. 20/20 hindsight, I should have taken the stupid quilt down to the RV before I trimmed the backing & batting. Crap! That will just take more time. Thank goodness I had my SIL leave quilting off the 1" edge, so attaching would be easier.

The quilt is beautiful! But, I think I would ad a small border around it, then add the skirt, too.

Beautiful quilt! Will look great in your motorhome I'm sure. If it were me, I'd just add the skirt. Like you said, no quilt police in your motorhome. I wouldn't want to hassle with all that extra work just for 2 inches, but that's me-I've accepted that I'm a failed perfectionist. LOL I would rather save that time to finish up another UFO or start another project. Whatever you decide to do, I'm sure you will really enjoy that quilt while vacationing.

WeeOne - I forgot to tell you that your quilt is very pretty. What have you decided?
