quilting hoops

Post by ctherrie » Sat Jan 10, 2009 3:46 pm

I was thinking of investing in a hinterberg quilting hoop, either a 14 lap hoop or 18 lap or possible with floor stand. Has anyone used one of these? I was wondering if repositioning a larger quilt in the hoop was difficult or not?

You can't go wrong with the Hinterberg quilting swivel lap hoop. It's a quality frame. At a Quilt Congress class we were told how to measure for a quilting hoop that will be the best size. Measure from inside your elbow to the tip of your middle finger. That is the size lap hoop you will want. I have the Q-Snap floor fame and I really like it. I use it to baste my big quilts. I have had my eye on this brand of lap and floor frame for awhile. Check it out:

That is a great looking quilt frame. I was really attracted to the swivel feature of the Hinterberg. Sometimes, I wish I could swivel my large floor frame, that is why I thought the lap frame we be cool. Thanks for the info about measuring for the hoop size I read that somewhere on the Hinterberg site, but had forgotten about that, tells you how long I have been dreaming about getting the quilt frame. Somehow I have a hard time spending money on myself.

Being able to turn your lap frame is a great help when hand quilting. I read where one continuous straight line of quilting is more likely to break when someone sits on them or puts pressure on a certain area. This makes the swivel feature really nice. Now I work back and forth and all directions just to keep the pressure points to a minimum. But resist the temptation to go for the bigger hoop because it will be a waste and very frustrating when you can't reach the middle. I use a 14" frame and that's about as much as my arms can reach. I use the Aunt Becky method of hand quilting and that was the size that Jean Brown reccomended. I thought it sounded kind of small but now I'm glad she knew what she was talking about. Right now I'm doing a queen size quilt and it is moving along very nicely. This particular frame is not hard to reposition as it has a flat base that sits in your lap and I just take my quilt in on my bed...lay it out...and slide it to my next postion. Hope this helps.......jan

I "store" a Hinderberg floor hoop that my mother bought. We both find it too uncomfortable to use and not that easy to rotate.
I have Jean Browns 14" lap hoop and like it better than the swivel one because there's more hand space under the hoop. Also use Aunt Becky. Dana

Well I checked out Jean's hoop and I see what you mean about more room underneath. I was wondering about that myself and I guess that is why I haven't invested in one yet. I guess I need to get online and order one. I think I may try her style of quilting also since I am bothered by carpal tunnel. Do you know a good site to find aunt becky and her thimble?

Hi,
I just found this site and love it. I am the guy who makes many unique frames that you may be interested in for your hand quilting. Take a peek at www.laptophoops.com. I am always looking for ways to improve my designs and need your input. Unfortunately, I don't quilt. It was my mom and dad who got me started making the frames. She never showed me how to quilt, but my dad taught me the woodworking. Please pass the link on if you like what you see.
Thanks,
Harry

I bought the large Hintenberg Floor Frame that swivels and did not like it. I sold it and have a 14" round hoop that is use and it is easy to positon it where ever I want. have done many queen size quilts with it.

I started off with a Q-Snap frame, but decided it was too deep. My husband found some PVC pipe the same diameter and cut me new sides. This worked better, but ultimately I decided I didn't like sitting at the frame -- and it took up a lot of room visually.

In the meantime, I had been hemming and hawing about getting some sort of a frame, leaning toward a lap from. The LQS which sells the Hinterberg frames insisted that I needed the floor frame if I was working on a queen/king size quilt. So, I put off buying a frame/hoop. I just didn't think a floor frame was right for me - regardless of the size of the quilt.

Finally I broke down and bought and bought Jean Brown's hoop with the intention of using the Aunt Becky finger protector. I love the hoop. At the end of the day I gather the quilt up and shove it in a laundry basket. I even took the quilt and hoop on a road trip over Labor Day.

Now, if I can figure out how to use the Aunt Becky thing -- right now I'm stab stitching == it works, but it's slow.
