HELP, my block came out the wrong size--sweet success

Post by Kittyquilt9292 » Sun Jan 04, 2009 4:00 pm

Jan 8, 2009......update
Just finished the block using the CORRECT directions, thanks to Littlebit, and the block is just right. Those little seam allowances can really raise havoc with calculations! carol/kittyquilt

I have a pattern for a 12 inch finished block. I wanted to make a 6 inch finished block of that pattern. I followed the formula for reducing: size of Original (12) divided by Size you want (6) = % to decrease (50%). So, I reduced the given cutting sizes by 50%, sewed all the pieces together and lo and behold, the size is 5 1/2 inches unfinished, which will make a 5 inch finished, not 6.

What did I do wrong?

Thanks, carol/kittyquilt

Did you forget to take the seam allowance out before you reduced the pattern? You need to take the piece size minus the seam allowance then divide that size in half - then add your seam allowance back in - hope this makes sense :o)

Littlebit, thanks so much. that's what I didn't think about. Once I read your post it made so much sense. I actually went back and read again the instructions, and nothing about seam allowances. Just the formula, thought maybe I missed something because I was in a bit of a hurry.

Went to another reference book I have, same thing, just the formula. The authors are really confusing by not including that huge bit of the instruction.

Again, thank you so much for ending my frustration and giving me a new learning. hugs, carol/kittyquilt

This is why I love EQ. It converts any block patten to different sizes. I use it more for converting block then designing them.

I think I have to put an EQ on my want list for something, maybe birthday, that's far enough away to save some $$$. LOL
