PillowCase Quilt Binding Technique???

Hi to all - I have a quilt top made and would like to try the "pillow case" method instead of the traditional quilt then bind method. I'm not sure it's called "pillow case" but it's where you put the batting down, then the backing then the top, but turn the top upside down onto the backing. Then you stitch all the way around the edges but leave enough of an opening to turn the whole thing right side out. Then quilt it. This eliminates the binding step. Any suggestions or helpful hints? I've got the whole thing sandwiched and am going to try it in the morning with my walking foot. I saw this demonstrated on Simply Quilts about a year ago & can't remember any more detail than this. I've done this before with baby quilts.. El calls it birthing the quilt. Very easy method you will love it.

Hi Grammy2 - Thanks for posting. Do you know how far from the edge I should sew? I was thinking 1/2 inch. I was afraid 1/4 would be too small and not catch very well or might pull out. I think I also remember that the corners needed to be trimmed pretty closely before you turn it. Thanks in advance for your help. Kristi

Hi Kristi -

I've done this on many of my quilts. Somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 works well for me. I just use the edge of my regular foot as a guide. For the corners, I found it easier to round them a bit. I use a coffee mug to mark the stiching line and then trim. Gives a nice little extra touch by not having square corners. Easier to turn also...

How did it turn out Kristi? I know you will love this method. I too have done rounded corners. I also put a decorative stitch around the edge

Hi Grammy 2 - I sewed it up on Friday. I like how the edges look and definitely am glad that I don't have to do a binding but.... I didn't keep it quite as smooth as I should have. I have it turned right side out and it is pin basted. I hope to get to work on it tomorrow night. I think the quilt top I chose to do it with was just too big. Maybe it should have been pin basted heavier before I tried to sew it. Overall it's OK. When I get it finished I'll post a picture & let you be the judge
