HELP Which Thread is Correct?

Post by Sharen-Lee » Sun Sep 28, 2008 6:07 am

I previously was using Coats & Clark thread 37% Cotton 63% Polyester, my understanding that the cotton wrapped Polyester makes it stronger. Yet I have recently been told, do not use this as it has a tendency to ruin the tension of our machine (I have a Baby Lock-Creative Pro)that I am confused now, as I made 13 fleece blankets for Christmas presents yet when I am making quilting blocks, my tension is just fine. So must I always use 100% cotton no matter what fabric I use? even when I asked about the Sulky threads for emblishments, was told not to use this too yet I like to emblish sweatshirts & table runners too?? is there a right or wrong answer here? THANK YOU FOR HELPING!!

Depending on the thread you use, you might have to adjust your tension but I don't think threads of any kind will ruin your tension. I think you might want to check with your dealer about this. Or read in your owner's manual. If there is a certain type of thread you should use, it will tell you in the manual.

my favorite place to buy thread is superiorthreads.com
They have a thread for everything. I love the metalic it does not shred. I use the Masterpiece for applique and piecing and general sewing. Beautiful colors. Lots of info about the different threads they have and how to use them. I started using the threads in Jan. after a lecture at the Ontario Convention center in Ontario,Ca. at the Roads to California Quilt show. I am so fortunate to live only about 20 min. away.

I use the C&C poly/cotton for clothing. For piecing and quilting I only use 100% cotton. However, for embellishments, I'll use rayon, metallic, whatever looks best and isn't actually holding the work together.

If my high dollar machine can't handle a spool of Coats and Clark thread then I want my money back. C&C thread is not the voodoo thread that it's made out to be.

I haven't had trouble with that thread, but my treadle machine doesn't like the cheap polyester kind. It always breaks.

I just had to have the internal thread guides replaced on my machine, due to poor quality thread according to the tech that repaired her. I believe him; I bought the machine used from a dealer a year and a half ago, and had nothing but problems until I took it someplace else for repair but now she sews like a dream. According to the tech, shorter fiber threads are 'rougher' and the thin metal guides inside the machine were almost chewed clean through. After they were replaced, all my tension problems went away.

Until this happened, I wouldn't have thought thread could make that much of a difference.

Dual Duty has short cotton fibers around the poly core so if you have internal guides I would avoid that. The machine quilting Coats and Clark thread is not short fiber thread according to what I can find. Why does thread manufacturers make it so hard to figure out what is on a spool?
