Necktie Quilts
I just fell heir to about 8 dozen mens' silk neckties and would like to make a quilt out of them. I've found a few patterns and ideas on-line but was wondering if anyone here has ever made one. Hints? Tips? Ideas? Does the fact that they are silk make any difference? Would you take them apart and just use the fabric or use them "as is"? If there has already been a discussion regarding this, have patience, please. Some of us "newbies" might not have been around when the original thread was posted. Just let me know and I'll go searching through the "archives". Thanks so much for any help anyone can give me. Mary

Re: Necktie Quilts
I haven't, but my brother-in-law died and my sister is after me to make a necktie quilt for her out of his silk ties.
According to my brother-in-law's sister, the ties should be taken apart so they are much larger. That's her opinion. I've never seen a necktie quilt, so I don't know.
It would be dry-clean only, I guess.
I'm interested in what you find out, so hopefully, somebody on here will have the answer.
Good luck
Joanne

Re: Necktie Quilts
I also have quite a few neckties from my grandfather and my thought was to arrange them in a circle like a dresden plate.... you would have to shorten them but could use the tails in the border.... you could also do a grandmothers fan and make quite a few smaller blocks then piece them together....
I have been thinking about this one for a long time... the patterns I have seen simply strip piece the ties together so that they are each in their own row then sew the rows together....
Please let me know what you come up with... I would love more ideas.

A Dr's wife in our area made a queen size quilt using neckties donated from all the Dr's in the hospital where he works. She took them apart and used the fan pattern for them . I assume she backed them with interfacing of some kind and it turned out beautiful. It now hangs in the hospital framed under glass. Marge

Thanks everyone for all the ideas and sources. I've checked out all the sites everyone has offered and found some good ideas. I'll give it some lengthy consideration while I ponder my ties. When I finally finish this project (and that will be no time soon!) I'll post photos! My DD has already declared dibs on the quilt! Mary

I haven't taken the class, but there is a class at this site on using neckties. There is a forum section there just on the topic for people who subscribe to the class.

I think the apple core pattern looks nice and works well for a scrappy quilt. I thought I saw El making an apple core quilt on one of her shows. There's a kit on QIAD that is for Fusible Apple Core but I didn't read about it, I just saw it while skimming through.

Here's the link:

Copy and paste into your browser if it doesn't work, or type "apple core" into the search box at the top of the page.

Re: Necktie Quilts
FYI I had a man call me a few weeks ago about his tie quilt he had made after he retired from teaching. after spending money on having his collection of ties taken apart and made into a quilt after some use some of the ties are litterly coming apart at the seams and other places. {His expensive lesson that not all ties are made equally}
My recommendation is to put in the best quality ties together and leave out the any others you consider 'questionable'.
Have fun with it.
