Bad Bad Quilt

Post by Sandy5689 » Wed Aug 27, 2008 3:25 pm

I just finished the worst quilt top I have ever made. Even though I am new at this I am throughly disgusted with myself. I think I tried to do something past my current ability and to top it off did not give it the time and care it needed. I just spread it out to put the backing and batting on it and I think the pattern is even wrong in places. Good Grief

Sandy, don't be discouraged. We've all had quilts that turn out bad. It's probably not as bad as you think it is. We are our own worst critic. Do you want to post a picture so we can give you our opinion? If this one is too bad, just do another one.

Too bad your first experience with quilting was a bad one. Put the quilt up in the closet and start a new one, you can always bring it back out and fix it when you get more experience. My advice make a small child quilt and make it simple. Children love blankets. The design on the material is more important to the child than how hard the pattern is or how well it is made.

Sandy, don't give up. Heck, we all make big boo boos. I made one just reacently and folded it up and stuffed it in the bottom of a plastic tote. I don't even want to look at it. It may end up in the garbage soon. But get back in the saddle girl and try an easier one!

Well hopefully you learned something from making it. Even if it was only not to make that pattern again. Try something else that's easier. You can always give this one away. I'm sure there is someone out there who would like it.

Yes I did learn that you really do have to square up the blocks. AND square them all to the same size. Too much fudging means the pieces do not really fit

Sandy most everything can be fixed. Maybe you just need to put it away for a while and work on another pattern. Then you may want to come back and salvage this one. On any blocks that are too small, you could take more of the same fabric and add a strip around ea block to enlarge them. That would be better than not finishing it. Or cut the larger blocks down to the same sz as the smaller blocks. I'd try to salvage it just because it is your first. I have my pathetic first even though I cannot bring myself to spend the time to quilt it. LOL It was badddddddd.

Sandy, I've been there and done that, perhaps a lot of us on here have.
Don't be discouraged, keep trying....thats what I did and although none of my quilts are show pieces or perfect in any way, the people I give then too know that they were made with love, and accept them as they are, flaws and all.

Sandy, breathe, breathe, breathe...

I do agree that sometimes putting it away and letting your brain get a rest from it is a good idea. I second-guess myself sometimes, but after taking a break, it's usually not as tragic as I thought!

I would encourage you to post a photo...it's probably not as bad as you think, and maybe some of us will have ideas as to how you can fix it. You have a seam ripper, right? It is your friend!

If worst comes to worst, and you just can't stand the sight of it another day, finish it and donate it to charity. Then it won't be a total loss; you will have put your time toward comforting someone.

Sandy don't feel too bad. My first quilting experience was a real wreck. I was rushed into buying fabric I really didn't like. I was talked into a KING size when I had told her I really wanted to learn to hand quilt. (I didn't know what 'credit card quilting' was.) But look at it this way.....it costs money to go to school. And boy did I learn! I'm a great believer in if you learn from your mistakes it wasn't wasted money. So chalk it up to a learning experience and keep on going. I still keep mine around to remind me of all the things I don't like about it so I do better the next time. So don't give up. The next one you can make to suite YOU. Jan in PA
