Fabric for a Queen Size Quilt

Post by DollyQuilt » Thu Aug 21, 2008 8:53 am

Don't know if this is the right place or not, BUT, I have a friend who would like to know how much fabric to buy. She wants to make a queen size quilt using 5" squares. She thought maybe 8 or 10 colors. How much of each color fabric would she need to buy for a queen size quilt? Any info would be really appreciated!

She can figure it this way... The standard queen is 86" square.
You can get 7 5-1/2" squares across the width of a 40" piece of fabric. For a quilt that''''s 86x86", she will need 17 squares across and 17 squares down, for a total of 289 squares. Each square should be 5-1/2" square.
If she wants to use 8 colors, she will need 36 each of 7 and 37 of the other. She needs 33" of each color.
If she wants to use 9 colors, she will need 32 of 8 and 33 of the other. She needs 25" of each color.
If she wants to use 10 colors, she will need 28 of 9 and 29 of the other. She needs 23" of each color.
This is IF she isn''''t having anything other than squares. If she''''s also having border, this isn''''t correct.

Suggestion, I am part of a group at our local quilt store. Our group is called "Let's go Scraping. We use a the book Nickel Quilts, all the quilts are made using scraps cut into 5" squares and each pattern list the number of squares needed for lap, twin and queen size quilts. The authors are Pat Speth and Charlene Thode. Several of the quilts have been made and shown to the rest of the group, like a show and tell. All have turned out to be very pretty. Hope this helps.
