Re: Favorite Recipes
Anyone have a recipe for DARK rye bread without using a bread machine? Most of the recipes I have found require a bread machine and I don't have one.

Re: Favorite Recipes
Hi Ladies! Here's one that will feed a crowd!
Elephant Stew
1 elephant salt & pepper
brown gravey 2 rabbits
Cut elephant into bite sizes (this will take about 4 months)
Cook over kerosene at 525F until tender (about 5 months)
Add salt & pepper and cover with brown gravey.
Serves about 3800 people. If more are expected, add 2 rabbits.
Do this only if necessary, as most people do not like to find hare in their stew!
Enjoy! Janie

Re: Favorite Recipes
Michelle06H, There are 2 good Rye Bread recipes in The Tassajara Bread Book. Too long and complicated to type out here, but worth borrowing the book from the library and trying. This book is the bible of bread making. I learned to make bread by using this book. My copy is very stained .... always a good sign for a cookbook.
Good Luck,

As a kid I remember my Mom making a cake from the back of a cocoa can. When it baked it made a fudge sauce type center. It didn't use icing, just the cake. I can't find the recipe anywhere. It was so quick and good. Espically when you ate it warm with vanilla ice cream. Do any of you have that recipe? ~Abbigail~

Re: Favorite Recipes
my grandmother used to make what she called..... pick a lily.... it was used as a relish and made with green tomatoes and onions... you had to cook down this mixture with other stuff... it was sweet almost like sweet pickle relish but not quite that sweet.
does anyone have the recipe ? she used to put it up in mason jars

Yummy easy moist chocolate cake
Lissa's Chocolate Cake
Dump in bowl:
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
2/3 cup vegetable oil
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
1 tsp salt
6 tablespoons cocoa
Add 2 cups boiling water while mixing above mixture. This will look like mud when you pour it into a greased & floured cake pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 min or until toothpick comes out clean.
This cake is very moist and I do not recommend using this recipe when trying to decorate a special cake.
I frost with a cream cheese frosting and my husband like almond flavoring in the frosting.
Sorry, I forgot temp & cooking time.......
Happy baking, Sharon V.

Re: Favorite Recipes
Chriss,
Here's a recipe for Piccalilli I found in my canning book: Hope it is what you are looking for...
4 Qt's chopped, peeled, cored green tomatoes (about 32 medium)
2 Qt's chopped cabbage (about 1 lg. head)
2 cups chopped sweet green peppers (about 4 small)
1 cup chopped onion (about 1 med)
1/2 cup salt
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
2 T. mustard seeds
1 T. celery seed
1 T. prepared horseradish
4 1/2 cups vinegar
Combine the vegetables in a large bowl. Sprinkle salt over them and mix. Let them stand for 3-4 hours. Drain, rinse and drain again thoroughly.
Combine the sugar, spices, horseradish and vinegar in a large pot. Simmer 15 minutes. Add the veggies and bring to a boil. Pack the hot relish into hot jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace. Process in a boiling water canner for 10 minutes.
