Just wanted to share some info about the tossed 9 patch pattern. If you want to buy it, they have it at JoAnns Fabric store. It is 9.00 same as on QUIAD site, but if you have a 40% off coupon for joanns it will save some money. I did not know about the tutorial, so I bought it today at joann's and used my coupon.

I think I confused you Carol. I wanted the 9 patch pattern anyway for my collection. So I went ahead and bought it. I hope I didn't leave the wrong impression.

Some clarification will be coming. Don't order special patterns for just one block! I think there's some confusion about all the "9-patch variations." I will try to clarify the differences. Pls just give me a bit of time to get everything together so it makes sense! I have info on all of them. Again, I emphasize, we don't want to have anyone having to buy something they don't really want for themselves for jsut one block.
also, in group 3 no one asked for "tossed 9-patch." There is one in group 4, but let me make sure what she's asking for.
If you've never seen the "tossed 9-patch" you just might want to take a look, it is really nice and easy.
Okay, not to panic anyone, just give me a bit of time. A heads up, I'm having difficulty with my internet connection, just slipped in my chance here, but we have to get the repairman in to see what's wrong. so, it may be a day or 2 before I get on again.
I also have some addresses to add and a correction on a link, but I cannot get into my email, either, so give me a couple days to get that taken care of then I can email the corrections.
Thanks for your patience, HUGS, carol/kittyquilt

This IS the block that SuZQ wanted. We always called it Tossed 9.

How do I know? I am her Mother and helped her pick it out.

Hi everyone, well, I'm back on thanks to DH. He was able to get the cable guy on the phone and follow the directions and get our connection back. I was getting withdrawal!
Anyway, I have some updates that I will send out tomorrow on address corrections/completions and some block corrections. (Majik47, thanks for the info for SuZQ, that really helps).
For the 9-patch, poor thing, it gets so many names and so confusing!
1. The simple 9-patch is just 9 squares cut the same size and sewn together. It can be made using strips and then cutting to size, or just cutting the squares. It can be scrappy, or can have 5 of one fabric and 4 of another. If you want to see a sample, there is a pattern on Quilterscache. Just go to 12 inch patterns and find NinePatchBlock.
2. The disappearing 9-patch is 2 different patterns, depending on what tutorial you use. If you use the one that teacupdelights gave us the link for (above in this thread) and Majik47 said is the one SuZQ wants) it is 9 blocks of different fabrics sewn together, then cut in half horizontally and vertically, then sew together. Many people call this the tossed 9-patch.
If you use the pattern given in: blocksnswaps.blogspot.com/2008/02/disappearing-9-patch.html, you see a quite different result. In this one, completed blocks of an already made pattern are used. They're cut apart and sewn back together to make an entirely different pattern, yet keeping the basic main figure in the blocks.
3. The tossed 9-patch is a pattern by Eleanor Burns. She does a bit different version, placing one square of the same fabric in each block before they're cut horizontally and vertically. This pattern booklet is not available on line that I could find.
For more on these patterns, and some pictures and discussions, go to these topics here on the Forum. Several members have kindly posted information and photos.
1. In the General Quilting & Fabric Discussions, "Take 5 Quilt Instructions" topic has a good discussion and photo instruction about the tossed and disappearing 9-patch. In that topic are links for the turorials kindly posted by several members.
2. In the Photo Section are several pictures of completed quilts using these patterns. I brought some back to the beginning of the thread, so go look in that section. (Thanks to those who posted the photos).
I hope this is clearer than mud! and that I didn't confuse you more!
For Group 4
SuZQ wants the disappearing 9-patch, as Majik47 says above here--the link that she lists and teacupdelights gave us the link for above--not Eleanor Burn's tossed 9-patch.
For Group 3
9patchfav asked for a 9-patch OR quilters choice. She wants a 9 1/2 in unfinished block, so if you make a simple 9-patch, cut the squares 3 1/2 inches. That will give you a 9 1/2 inch unfinished, 9 inch finished block.
If there are more questions or I've completely confused you, please let me know via pm or here. Look for the email of corrections, I will send it out tomorrow, so you should have it by tomorrow evening. If you don't get it, pls pm me.
Thanks to everyone who posted here on the discussions about the 9-patch and for giving links and info.
Have fun with the blocks, HUGS, carol/kittyquilt

If I was supposed to have gotten an email with information it didn't come or I deleted it as I didn't recognize the email address. Can somebody clear the mud for me.

I made what I thought was a DNP (Disappearing Nine Patch) last year and I must say I believe the techniques are the same as a Tossed Nine. I didn't have a pattern, so I didn't have a name except for what I saw online. You sew 9 squares together, cut in the center horizontally and vertically, flip two corner blocks and sew back together. Now, there are different layouts besides the flipping one, but that's the most popular one. It really does make a differance of color and fabric placement. I used the same fabric for all center squares, butterfly fabric for the 4 corners, yellow for both middle side squares and turq for the top and bottom middle squares and I flipped. So, do we need to know the color placement desired?

Do a Google Image search for both patterns and they look the same except for what the maker uses for color and fabric and how they're placed in the 9-patch.
Take 5 is a completely different pattern.

Here is a picture of my block and a finished quilt. My block is using WOW and brights (scrappy). I've made all of the blocks except Denise's. But I'll make a sample first.

Caroline - This was just a picture of a sample of my block. It isn't someone's block. I saw someone else a posted a picture of what their block should look like.
