Flying Geese Help

Post by lizzielou »

Hi! I'm a new quilter and loving it to death! I've been practicing making laptops for my 9 grandchildren (3 down and 6 to go).

I want to try making a couple with flying geese. I would like some ideas of patterns to try that are not too difficult.

Any ideas?

Hi lizzielou, glad you found us. There is a flying geese book & ruler set on this website that is wonderful. You will love making flying geese.

Hi LizzieLou!

Eleanor's method is really easy once you learn how.

Here's an online video: (Click on the one that says "Flying Geese Ruler") You can also go there by scrolling to the top of this screen and clicking on "Television and Video".

http://www.quiltinaday.com/television/' ... elevision/

Here's a pdf file with the instructions: (You can also go there by scrolling to the top of this screen and clicking on "DOWNLOAD FREE PATTERN")

Also under DOWNLOAD FREE PATTERN are patterns using Flying Geese.

I aggree with Grammy2 that the rulers sold here at QIAD are fantastic. I don't like making them any other way any more. Especially that old method of drawing diagonal lines on a square then sewing it to a rectangle and then slicing off the unused corner - what a waste of fabric!

Forgot to mention another website full of free patterns:

http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlock ... ore54.html

You can also just browse through all their patterns:

http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlock ... alore.html

They may tell you different methods of doing flying geese, but you can still use QIAD method instead of theirs.

I use either of these methods according to what mood I'm in at the time.

Quick easy way for flying geese unit. Don't let the 3D description scare you, it's not noticable at all that's it's 3D unless you want it to be.

I have El's flying geese rulers and they are easy and make perfect geese units too.

Hi I found a flying geese pattern with the block using only one seam. It is from RickyTimms and it was on the "The Quilt Show" web site with ricky Timms and Alex Anderson. It was one of the first episodes and you did not have to join or anything to watch a sample episode that this technique was on.

Lizzie -

Once you figure out how to make the geese, try the Dutchman's Puzzle block.
