Janome Gem Gold is a great portable machine but it is not inexpensive but not pricey. I paid about $300 all total for mine. I bought my DD a Kenmore for about $100 and it sews just as good as my Janome Gem, the same features too. I would definitely give the Kenmore's a look.

I have the little Brother machine, but havn't gotten a chance to use it much yet. It seems fine and cost less than $200 at Overstocked.
It has a lot of features, but no knee-lift.

Good luck shoppin and let us know what you get.

I had the Jem, very basic machine. I highly recommend the Brother CS-6000. It even has the auto thread cutter! Needle up/down, stop/start, a ton of stitches included the blanket stitch, digital AND it weighs 10 pounds. Everyone I know that has one for cless just loves the thing. I sold my Jem on ebay. I want the Brother instead. Amie

They are around $139

Kenmore machines are made by Janome. I suggest looking at Kenmores - Sears has them on sale all the time.

I have a Kenmore computerized machine and absolutely love it. It has I think around 215 or more stitches which is just enough to be able to add some decorative things to your quilt. It also has the needle up/down position which you just have to have. Mine was around $450 new. It really is worth looking into.

If you live somewhere where there is a good repair shop, consider getting an older machine. My husband bought me a Singer Genie for $5 at a garage sale. Seller said 'it worked the last time we used it'. It was simple enough DH and I cleaned it up a good bit and then took it in to the repair shop. For $125 they got it working good as new. It's great for piecing. Now If I will just leave my big machine at home when I travel - which was the intent!
