Tall Ship wall hanging

Post by justdawne » Fri Mar 21, 2008 12:09 pm

This is what I have worked on this afternoon. It's my variation of the Tall Ships (variation) block at Quilter's Cache. I had lots of half triangles in blue and white just sitting there doing nothing. I'm making this block (approx. 20 inches) into a wall hanging.

I'd like to use this to learn free motion quilting. I was thinking a stippling effect in the blue and a stitch in the ditch to outline the boat and sails.

Any suggestions? Do you think the size is alright or should I add another border?

Thx,
dawne

Dawne, that's really pretty. What kind of material is the shiny silver? No suggestions on the free motion quilting as I'm just trying to learn that myself. Please post a picture when you've finished.

Stormy,
The shiny fabric is actually white. I bought it after Christmas during a good sale. It's 100% cotton even though it's so shimmery and somewhat translucent. I *think* it's part of the 'All that Glitters" fabric line.

Dawne, that is so pretty, love it! That's a great idea to practice free-motion quilting on something small to start! What you have in mind sounds like it'd look really good, and I don't think it needs another border, it's pretty just like it is.

That ship is really nice....how about free-motioning some waves for the background?

Real nice. Good way to use up some of those scrap triangles. I'll have to remember that-I have lots of scrap triangles.

Your work is beautiful and your fabrics are perfect! I think it is a great size as it is.

I love your sail boat design. Your color selection really stands out too. Maybe some wavy motion on the bottom part for the water in a shimmering type thread and some kind of cloud looking stippling on the top for sky would really set it all off. Post a pic when you get finished. Thanks for sharing such a pretty wall hanging. Shirley Mae

OOOHHH, nice. The colors are beautiful. Personally, I wouldn't add any border, just the 2 colors are striking. Good luck with the quilting, I have a small UFO that I want to practice with, but haven't found the time, too many other "deadline" projects do finish to spend practice time. carol/kittyquilt
