Re: Crazy Quilt Swap - Homeward Bound
Using scraps of fabric was the traditional way of doing a craqy quilt block and that is what I always do when making mine. I hate to ask anyone to go out and buy fabric if they do not have repro fabrics in their stash. What we could do is keep it to med to dark colors and no bright or neon colors.
I always try to tie my blocks together using sashing and borders that reflect colors or theme.

Re: Crazy Quilt Swap - Homeward Bound
This was my first and only try at a crazy quilt project. It was for a Christmas stocking exchange.

And this is a block I received in a Blue and White Block Exchange

This was a spider that was hand embroidered on the block. I understand that the spider holds some significance in crazy quilting. Does anyone know why?

dj, very nice stocking and I love that blue block you received. I really like using my scraps for crazy quilting and I use an assortment of colors that go well with each other in mine. I really need to find my blocks and take some pictures of them so everyone can see what I mean.

dj, I don't know the significance of the spider, but imagine it has to do with the weaving of different fabrics to make one total piece. At least that sounds good to me.LOL
I will have your patterns in the mail tomorrow morning.

I hope more people will join in on this swap! It's a great way to use up scraps.

Re: Crazy Quilt Swap - Homeward Bound
I'm really tempted, but first I need to try a block to make sure I can do it. I had made a few tiny blocks using *tiny* bits of scraps and they turned out good, but I didn't use a foundation piece, so I need to try this first.
Just to make sure I'm getting this right, we just use 100% cotton-- variety of colors and prints, and the embellishments are optional? Am I right on this?
I'll try to put one together this evening...

Re: Crazy Quilt Swap - Homeward Bound
DJ, I looked up the spider/Crazy quilt thing online and found this, "Some quilters believed that embroidering a spider on its web would bring good luck to the quilter" on a quilting history site, Crazy Quilting History: A Victorian Craze. I think I would like to have a spider on my quilt---(embroidered one, that is)!
