Bauhaus Quilt

Post by SFOQuilter » Fri Feb 15, 2008 7:33 pm

A friend of mine saw this quilt in a book called "Quiltmaker's Color Workshop" and fell in love with it. Turns out a local woman actually specializes in making these quilts but charges $2250 for this size. That's right $2250! My friend really wanted one but didn't want to pay that much (obviously) so I layed it out in EQ6 as close as I could figure and let her pick the colors she wanted. I used all Kona cotton solids (it is solid dark gray on the back) and it went to together very quickly, it is very simple. I spent $50 total on all the fabric. Then the challenge was the quilting. It is all channel quilted and I had never done that before. My HQ 16 is not computerized but does come with a little $3 clip to put on a wheel of the machine to limit it's foreward/aft movement or left/right movement. So I put the clip on the front wheel and started moving the machine across over and over and over:) It took about 4 hours to do the quilting. I marked the left side of the quilt so I would have evenly spaced starting points and while not all the rows are absolutely perfectly spaced I love how it turned out. Some of the "bumps" add to the charm and make it unique and home made looking. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!! LOL

Yours is very lovely. You said $50 in fabric and 4 hours of time?

How do you think the other lady justifies a $2250 quilt? I wonder how many people actually pay that? Is her quilting more complex or what?

I do think most quilters I've heard of sell their work a bit too cheaply but $2000+ is a bit much!

Your friend is lucky to have you as a friend. I'm sure she will adore this quilt.
