Had to laugh at Kadies post about Men inventing triangles. Non-sewing Men at that~! LOL I always starch the heck out of triangles. Well I starch everything but especially triangles. From what I can see, it honestly looks good! We are so hard on ourselves! I have been burned a bit by Kits on the beginning of my quilting experience and stopped buying them. I did get 2 last year in Houston and scared now to start them. Keep at it Girlfriend. You will get 'er done.

Huge Hugs

I didn't know about the starching trick. :( And when I ironed them I didn't do it straight up & down. I was pressing as hard as I could and dragging the iron back and forth with a vengence. I just kept at it, trying to get them to lay flat and now I realize I was making things a hundred times worse. I've learned a couple lessons: Don't do an on-point project ever again and don't buy kits. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful fabric and a lovely pattern. It's just that the directions are very sparse and certainly for someone who doesn't NEED directions ... and what I paid was just silly. It's a good thing there wasn't lighter fluid and matches around last night! lol

I agree starch works wonders. Ironing back and forth is what got my triangles messed up what I did was wet my fabric and reshape it while it was damp, then press it back into shape. I have had to do that with garmet construction before so I thought hmm fabric is fabric and maybe it will work...and it did.

I would also hesitate to order a kit I need wiggle room in the amount of fabric since I make mistakes (a friend calls them unintentional modifications)

Your quilt looks nice. Your DOG looks like I'd have to give her a great big KISS!! I'd lay right down on your floor & give her a belly rub & snuggle!!! She's beautiful!!

The quilt looks good to me. I'll be doing side triangles on the twins quilts. El makes it look so dang easy so I hope I can do it. Patch is precious. How big is she?

Do you think I could get by with dampening the fabric and smooshing it back into shape WITHOUT taking the seams apart? And then try to press it flat without sawing back and forth with the iron like there's no tomorrow? And maybe use some starch at that point?

Answer for cindyg: Patch weighs 42 pounds but three months ago she was less than half that weight. She was skin and bones and lost in
the high desert of eastern Oregon. My husband found her when he was bird hunting. He was 35 miles from the nearest town and the
poor dog couldn't even get on her feet. He carried her three miles back to his truck and drove 4-1/2 hours with her on the seat beside him (wrapped in his coat) to get home.

When he got here we took her straight to the vet for a thorough
exam and cried like babies when we saw the xray of her pelvis. At
some point in her life she must have been hit by a vehicle because her left hip has been shattered. The top of the femur where there is supposed to be a "ball" doesn't exit. The ball was shattered. It gets worse, there is not even a hip socket, it was shattered too.
Somehow though she survived and everything healed all crazy. There are just pieces of bone where there should be a joint. She also had fleas, a bad case of mange, and her immune system had crashed because of starvation.

To make a very long story short ... we got the fleas and mange taken care of, put some pounds on her, had her spayed, got all her shots, got her dog tags, and had an identification chip put in. And now that she's healthy (and you won't believe this) she can run like the wind ... you can't slow her down. All her doctors are amazed she even gets around on that leg ... all I can say is God works miracles. They think she is between 12 and 18 months old ... and at some point she may need a hip replacement. In the meantime she needs to exercise (lots of trips to a doggie pool and long walks) to keep her muscles from atrophing because if they do have to to surgery they need the tissues to be healthy.

She was just meant to be ours ... there was hundreds of square miles of nothing but rocks and dirt where my husband found her and she wouldn't have lived much longer ... be it starvation or coyotes. And we couldn't have found a sweeter, more gentle and loving dog if we'd looked for a month so we are all winners. :)

Corners for On-Point Settings
One of the most frequently asked questions is, "How do I determine the cutting size of setting and corner triangles for a quilt with blocks that are set on point?" Now here is the answer. QUICK CUTTING METHOD FOR SETTING & CORNER TRIANGLES

Use the formula below to calculate the size of the square needed for quick cutting. You will need to know the size of the finished block.

Finished Block size = _______
Setting Triangles:
1. Finished Block size x 1.41 (round to nearest 1/8”) = Finished diagonal
2. Add 1.25” (or 1 1/4”) to Finished diagonal measurement to obtain the size of the square to cut.
3. Cut one square and cut in half diagonally TWICE for four setting triangles. Repeat to cut the number of setting triangles needed.

Corner Triangles:
1. Finished Diagonal of block ÷ 2 = Finished diagonal of Corner Triangle
2. Add .875 (or 7/8”)
3. Cut two squares in half diagonally ONCE for four corner triangles.

Setting Squares: Finished Block size + .5 (or 1/2”) EXAMPLE:

Finished block size = 6"
Setting Triangles: 6 x 1.41 = 8.46 (round up to 8.50)
8.50 + 1.25 = 9.75 (or 9 3/4")
Size to cut square, 9 3/4"

Corner Triangles: 8.50 ÷ 2 = 4.25
4.25 + .875 = 5.125 (or 5 1/8")
Size to cut square, 5 1/8"

Setting Squares: 6 + .5 = 6.5 (or 6 1/2")
Size to cut squares, 6 1/2" Share A Tip

That is such a sweet story. She was meant to be a part of your family!

We got our Stanley from CARE. They had him for a year. His previous owners had to move and they didn't know whether to shoot him or find him a home. CARE came to the rescue. They had trouble finding him a home. He weighed 59 pounds at the time and he's half Border Collie and half Black Lab. He's a beautiful dog but for some reason people don't like to adopt a black dog. He also had an attitude problem. If he didn't like the person staring at him through the cage, he would walk up to them and pee on them. He fits right into our family. He's the most laid back dog ever! He won't lower himself to chase cats or rabbits or to even acknowledge them. The only way he would get out of the back yard (he's a house dog) is if the gate is wide open. He doesn't consider himself a dog. He won't dig holes either. When it's pill time, we just hand him a pill and he takes it.

CARE told us they thought he was four years old, but the vet said he was closer to seven and that he was underweight. Well, that means he's around 14 now. We have to lift him into the van because he can't jump anymore.

Oh, what's really funny is that I told DH and the boys that they could pick out the dog and they did. But Stanley decided that I was his human and it's his job to follow me around all day and keep an eye on me.
