Am I insane????
My DH had a request when I made our new quilt for the bedroom. He wanted it to be heavy, so I ended up using 3 layers of batting! I just began machine quilting it, did loosen the top thread tension to 1. It is a lesson in patience doing the quilting, but can do a row in about 7 minutes. Don't worry, I'm quilting in the ditch!!! I moved my sewing table around to maximize the flat area I'd have. If I'd only remember to turn the unquilted areas in, I know that things would go much faster.
This is what I get for listening to his request and making the quilt super heavy. The smart thing I did do was use thin batting and waited until AFTER the holidays and the house undecorated before even thinking about working on the bed quilt. It's going to be beautiful and we'll be plenty warm under it. Hey at least it'll help me build up the biceps and triceps!!
Am I insane or has anyone else used 3 layers of batting in a quilt?

I've never done 3 layers, but I have used a wool blanket for batting!

QuiltLady - you aren't insane, just a glutton for punishment. I think that would be one quilt I sent out to a long-arm quilter. What size is the quilt and how in the world are you getting all that in the neck of your machine? We're going to have to start calling you "WONDER WOMAN".

No, you're not insane! I've put a double layer of batting but not 3 before. Sounds like a great quilt to me cause I like them heavier too. Good luck on the quilting. and post a pic when you're finished.

No, not crazy. Thanks for the idea though. My DH loves heavy quilts. Hadn't thought about doing multiple layers of batting. Best Wishes on getting it done without injury.

I use wool batting for heavy quilts. It is super warm, and heavy. My husband likes to feel the weight of a quilt.

Ohhhh, take plenty of breaks and don't forget to stretch frequently. Icy Hot is real good for sore muscles; have your DH put some on your neck and shoulders...

I wasn't loving the in the ditch quilting so I tried hand quilting.. never gave free motion quilting a thought but it might just do the trick! Thanks for the idea!!

I have used multiple layers on small projects for texture - an ironing board lowered to the height of your table in front will help you support the weight - free motion is more liberating for me anyway- lol when my dh comes up with suggestions like that i ask him if he would like to give it a whilr
i know it will be warm post picutres when done
