There was a video of this posted on one of the other forums, but thanks to Sewbug I will never forget how to do this. Sure, relate it to food and I can remember!

There is a tutorial pdf file included on this website to show how to do this technique, and they take it one step further and do a curved flying geese

So, do you top stitch the geese down or leave them free?
Ruth
edit:
p.s. and how would you make a different size??

I guess it is personal preference if you would quilt them down or let them be. As for different sizes, the triangle piece is always going to be one half inch shorter than twice the length of the square you start out with. That is when you fold it in half it is 1/4 inch shorter than the square. So you could make them any size you want.

Making Geese in Any Size, The Formula:
You can make your Flying Geese in any size using the following formula:
I found this explaination maybe it makes more sense.
Size of squares = 1/2 inch larger than the desired finished height of the overall unit.
Height of the rectangle = same as the squares you cut.
Width of the rectangle = width of square times two minus 1/2 inch.
In other words, if you cut 2" squares, you would cut the rectangle 2" x 3.5"

Re: One seam flying geese method
I was playing around with 3 dimensional blocks and made some of the 1 seam flying geese and I loved it! was soooo easy and fun to do, fast to cut out and the effect was great. thanks for writing down the instructions. I am always looking for a way to make parts of blocks look 3 dimensional. I have used the flying geese and the 3d bow tie blocks in baby quilts and the babies play with the pleates made by the 3d effect.

Making my flying geese fly !
3 dimensional flying geese
I am not sure if the spreadsheet I made will print out correctly, but here goes. I made formula after much trial in error when I was experimenting with the one seam 3D flying geese.
formula:
background block x 2 minus 1/2 inch for your geese size
background size geese finished block size
Height by Width
6 inch square 11- 1/2 inch rectangle 5-1/2 inches by 11 inches
5- 1/2 in. square 10-1/2 inch rectangle 5 inches by 10 inches
5 in. square 9- 1/2 inch rectangle 4- 1/2 inches by 9 inches
4- 1/2 inch square 8 -1/2 inch rectangle 4 inches by 8 inches
4 in. sq 7- 1/2 inch rectangle 4 inches by 7 inches
3- 1/2 in square 6- 1/2 inch rectangle 3 inches By 6 inches
3 in. square 5- 1/2 inch rectangle 2.5 inches by 5 inches
2.5 in. square 4- 1/2 inch rectangle 2 inches By 4 inches
2 in square 3- 1/2 inch rectangle 1- 1/2 inches by 3 inches
1- 1/2 inch 2- 1/2 inch rectangle one inch by 2 inches
Theoretically you can make your geese larger than the 5 inches but I have not done a project requiring a larger goose. I also have not done any miniature project requiring blocks smaller then one inch for this technique. I found it difficult to use this technique in very small blocks.

Re: One seam flying geese method
This is so exciting, I can' wait to try it. My daughter is re-marring in Estes Park, Co June 20. I thought I found the pattern, but will probably use this for the first one, as it will go fast. I will use her wedding colors for the quilt. Thanks so much!!!!!
If any of you are in Estes Park, Co on the 20th or 21st, will be a Mary's Lodge. Would love to meet you all.
