Invisable Thread

Post by butterflydog » Thu Nov 08, 2007 12:11 pm

How do you work with this? The thread keeps breaking. I have regular thread on the bobbin and the invisable on top for machine quilting.

It can be really really tricky! Try changing to a different size needle, also make sure the bobbin thread isn't too heavy...usually a 50 wt is best. Sometimes putting your invisable thread on a thread holder a small distance behind your machine will get the swirls out of it before it reaches your machine. We will see if others have ideas....I don't like using it at all, but when I have to, I have to remind myself to come up for air...and breath...it is stressful!

I read somewhere that you are suppose to use a top stitch needle with invisable thresd because it has a longer groove. I have used the Sulky invisable thread with the top stitch needle and have had no problems. Carol

I just recently did machine work with invisible thread for the first time. I used Sulky brand invisible thread, a Universal 80/12 size needle made by Schmetz, and regular Guttermann's thread in the bobbin. These were recommended in QIAD's book on machine quilting. I had to loosen the top tension quite a bit to get to the point where the bobbin thread wasn't pulling up to the top layers and showing. If your invisible thread is breaking, I would try adjusting the tension and using a different machine needle. Also, if your invisible thread is old, it gets brittle (so I have heard).

Hope this helps; again, I am kinda new to this myself!

I have tried it with some cushions and it worked O.K. But I am not specially eager to use it again - I am afraid the thread will melt when ironed ...

I have the thread holders from Bernina that fits on the machine for about 12 spools. So, my thread goes up, and then down to the threading on the machine. I buy my invisible from QIAD and I have never had a problem.

Invisible thread can be so cool to work with however, there are a few tricks I have learned.

1.I must loosen up my tension, big time
2.I use a very light bobbin thread, 50 or even 60wt
3.I use the Sulky.004 mono thread clear on light, smoke on dark
4.I use a new sharp needle
5.I slow down a little, that thread is delicate

That's all I can think of right now, lol :)

I was having the same trouble; went to LQS and found this out; use the thread MastiffMom suggested and then a metallic needle (I think it's a 95). The needle needs to have a larger thread opening because the shape of the transparent thread is different than regular cotten. I never had another snapped needle or thread breakage after that. The needles are about $2 more than others but was well worth it.
