I first sewed on my Mother's machine - I think it was a Franklin?? Anybody ever heard of that? When I got married, my Grandmother gave me her treadle sewing machine (she said she couldn't see well enough to use it - and she lived with my Aunt, who had an Elna and was an accomplished seamstress!) and I sewed on that treadle machine for several years until I got my first Kenmore. The treadle machine is now in my daughter's home, but just for show - she likes antiques!

My MIL worked at Singers and they took a Singer 201 in on trade and she told me I needed to buy it. It is a rugged jewel of a machine. I bought it used almost 45 years ago and it still sews like a charm. Iuse it now mostly for upholstery and heavy duty things. I am thinking aout trying to machine quilt on it. I have a pfaff now that is great too but I bet it won't last like that Singer 201
Thanks for this post and the trip down memory lane

A door to door salesman sold my DH a Domestic in 1992. That was just the beginning! Sewed all my kid's costumes and clothes. Still have it, Amie

I learned to sew on my mother's Domestic straight stitch when I was about eight years old. When I graduated from high school my parents bought me a Singer 403a straight stitch. I thought I had died and gone to heaven to have my very own sewing machine. Jo Ann

I had a little crank one, probably a Singer when I was really young. Then used Mom's and my father bought me a straight stitch in 1966 for my birthday. It was all metal, very heavy, but sewed like a charm.
