Have just learned this Japanese technique on a course. There are many other interesting patterns (depending on the angle of weaving and on the pattern of fabrics used). Just feel a bit awkward about the thickness of the middle (weaved) part (it is ironed on so that it does not get unweaved again. Yes, and there are various stript that can be used for it - from ribbons to ready-made strips (ideally with a stick-on layer) and self-made strips (not biased)(you would need a special little gadget to make them). A long weaving needle comes handy, too. And I am told (depending on the type of strings - or even tubes you use) it is a good idea to quilt it properly to prevent fraying after washing. Enjoy!
