Re: Fabric Stash
I am one of the GUILTY buyers of Yards and Yards of fabric I like. If I am using a fabric with a print like Asian designs which are usually large I will get 3yds of each design. If I see a fabric that I like and might use it for a backing I will buy 8-10 yds. But I will say that I have enough of left over fabric to make several Queen size quilts. I do buy fat quarters usually of a hand died marble design which are beautiful to use. So I go crazy with my fabric purchases. I just made a patch work upholstery fabric to cover a sofa in out TV room and the fabric was given to me. It was samples so most of the pieces were about 17"x17". It looks great. I will post pics when I am done. So go Bonkers!!!

I try not to buy yardage, except for a specfic project, or at least unless I have a rough idea of what I may use the fabric for. If it's something I'm considering for a border, I'll try and get 4 yards. If it's something I just like really well, and absolutely no clue what to do with it, 1 or 2 yards, depending on price.

Maryq, Now what do we do with all this fabric. I too am guilty of having plastic totes filled with stash fabric. I buy them with intentions of making this or that, but it just doesn't seem to happen. Then I see more gorgeous fabric that I would like to have, and then there is another tote............ sigh....... any suggestions?? I did give to our LQS when they were collecting fabric to make childrens quilts for the hospitals, so I emptied one tote

I look at it as investing in my retirement. That's the way I feel about the 8 tote boxes of yarn I have also. Some day... a long time from now, when I do get to retire, and while I still have all my faculties I hope to be able to knit and crochet and quilt all day (with time off for potty breaks and meals) And I figure, when I do retire I won't likely be able to afford buying fabric on a whim (not that I can now.. but a little here and there) So I want to make sure that I have supplies on hand for when the day finally comes that I can live in sweats and t-shirts all day and sew!

If I really love the fabric I buy no less than 2 yards. You shouldn't hesitate to buy fat quarters of fabrics that are not your favorites, especially if you do any applique work. I was working on a round robin medallion for halloween and found I had no orange fabric in my stash. I ran out and purchased a fat quarter which plenty of fabric for the project I was working on. Now I try to think ahead and plan a little better for each project.

I know that local high schools are looking for material & batting. Our locak HS had a teacher who was showing students how to make a quilt!
Also check out your local brownies or junior girl scouts. Maybe you and a few friends could help them earn a badge by showing them how to make a friendship quilt or one the troop could make and donate to the local police, firemen, or EMT squads.
Our quilt club makes 36X36" square quilts for Preemies for Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. They can always use these adorable quilts for the "multiples" that are born. We tend to use some lighter colors or fun juvenile prints. The parents love these gifts of love and their babies will have them forever to cherish!
That's one way to use up your stashes.

Thanks for all the suggestions Shelly. I was making baby quilts for the local hospital, but I ran out of steam. I like your idea about the high schools or brownie projects. Because I don't have any children in the local schools I have been a little out of touch with these sources. But it is a really terrific idea! I know I could supply for the whole county
