Re: blocks, swaps, charms and other things and there instructions
I'm a newby, and I joined the January charm swap to see what it would be like to do one. I'm looking forward to getting 60 charms back in all kinds of fabric.
Thank you, Teacupdelights, for explaining LQS. I kept seeing it over and over and 'local quilt store' was the only thing I could come up with, but it took me almost a month to figure it out.
Audrey, most of the swaps seem to just be for fabric. You can use them in any quilt pattern you choose. If there is a specific block, it will be mentioned by the host. (For example, the mystery swap is for a 9-Patch block, but there are many variations of nine-patches: Contrary Wife, Shoo Fly, Maple Leaf, several star patterns, and lots more.)
My favorite place to look for free quilt patterns online is
http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore.html
Eleanor Burns' books are great, too. Or you can look for her QIAD episodes online and watch them right on your computer which is great if you prefer to actually see someone make the quilt block you are wanting to learn.
I agree with Marilynsgrammy that having the 'open' or closed' information in the subject line would be helpful.
And I think what has helped me the most with the swaps is a lot like what Checkers said. I open a new document on my computer and copy and paste the listing about the swap into it so I can refer back to it at any time. Then if I join the swap, when I get the PM with the address, I copy it and add it to the document about that swap.
I hope you'll join in. Just keep asking questions.

to the top again..I, too, was confused when I first saw these posted when I joined in late December. I have now completed 2 swaps (St Pats and I Spy) have sent in my black/white and Tea Cups. It is confusing but worth the investment, especially when using your own stash. The camaraderie and resulting fabric is worth it....

You'll also see BTT for Back To the Top (or Bump to the Top) (I had to ask, too.)
