Tried Something New

Post by grammy65 » Thu Oct 04, 2007 7:21 am

I'm sure I have shown this quilt before. I finally got the binding on. Because I had Minkee on the back, I was concerned about handstitching the binding on the back. I would like to machine stitch the binding on baby quilts just because they get so much use. But I hate that little flap you sometimes get. So thought I would try something different....for me anyway.

I sewed the binding on to the back and brought it around to the front. Then I used a little decorative stitch to stitch it down. It didn't turn out too bad. The edges are a little stiffer than I prefer, but with use I'm sure they will soften. It takes a while to do the decorative stitches...but is still faster than doing it by hand. I may do this on other baby quilts.

This is the quilt....Trip Around the World

Also...before this silly cold, I finished up the one class project from my quilt retreat. The blocks are from the Nickel Quilt book....

Looking forward to doing another Minkee-backed quilt. Promised my DGD that I would put Minkee on the back of the one she pieced by herself.

Beautiful job! I never thought of the decorative stitch before on the binding but it adds a special touch and they will never know unless you tell them that you were just trying to find an easier way. I'm going to try this next time.

Smart idea!

I love the quilt and the binding looks great. I tried that one time but the stitch I tried was too dense and I didn't really like the looks of it but I really like that stitch you did and I have one similar that has stars instead of the hearts that would probably work well too. Thanks for sharing, I may try that on my next binding.

Great job.

What a great idea of how to do the binding.
I will deffinitely try that technique.

I've never tried to do the 'Trip around the World' "yet", it looks pretty and comfy.

Love the class project also. Nice colors.

It's so pretty!!! I usually machine stitch my bindings. It's so secure & I think it looks nice too!

What an adorable quilt, and I love the idea of the decorative stitch to secure the binding! Have been thinking about it, but never dared to try. I think you've convinced me!

And, love the pattern for the block in the class project!

Thanks for the nice comments guys. I must tell you....the color of the Minkee does not show up very well in this picture. It is a beautiful pale lime green. That doesn't sound very pretty, but it is about the same color as the lightest green in the fabric. I'm seriously thinking of getting a new camera. I have sent this one in twice to be worked on, and I'm still having trouble.
