Swedish quilt exhibition, part II (Two national icons)

Post by HomespunMary » Sun Sep 09, 2007 1:55 am

This year, there are two late Swedes that have been celebrated a lot around the country. They are both something of "national icons" for Swedes in general. One is the biologist/botanist Carl von Linné, who was born 300 years ago - hence the celebration this year - and who invented the system used world wide today for how to classify plants and flowers (don't ask me about any details because I don't have a clue...). This celebration was also reflected in many of the quilts.

Here's one with his portrait:

And several flowers in his honor:

A close-up of one of my favourites:

And, a beautiful quilt with two front sides (and no back...). The one side:

And the other side (with Carl von Linné in the middle):

Plus, a gorgeuos flower quilt with a ribbon border I certainly recognized, LOL:

The other "national icon" was Astrid Lindgren, the author of Pippi Longstocking and other kids' books, who was born 100 years ago, and generally celebrated here as one of the most loved Swedes ever. She too was reflected in several quilts.

Here's her portrait in a photo quilt, with one of many famous quotes from her books: "The one who is the strongest must also be the nicest"

Other quilts featured the characters from her books:

And a close-up of Pippi, the strongest girl in the world, LOL:

I think I might bore you with even a few more pics in a little while, unless you scream at me and tell me to stop..:-) Of course, most of you are still asleep right now, so there's very little chance of stopping me, LOL!

I agree with you the beautiful white flower (Cosmos?) is stunning. Please keep the pics coming, no one here will ask you to stop I'm sure. Was it nice for you to "talk shop" with the other quilters there? Did you find anyone from your area with the same interest?

I remember in 4th grade my teacher introducing Pippi Longstocking to us. I loved those books. I don't remember how many there were, but there were at least two of them.

Thanks for sharing and don't apologize for them. We love them!

Good morning Maria,

Keep the pictures coming. I don't think anyone gets tired of looking at them. It is our own quilt show and we can go in our pjs.

Glad you are back and had so much fun.

The 5th one down looks like our french braid pattern with lattice. Have you seen the one HappyMrs designed and then made up? I like this one also, kind of like the attic window and can feature a flower or scene. Hmmmmmmmmmm, might have to try something like that.

In the 2nd quilt I really like the 3rd and 4th quilts. I tried the colorwash method a few times but didn't get it to look like I wanted it to. And I just have to learn how to applique like in the 4th quilt.

I'm glad you had such a nice time. What is your next project?
Have Fun,
Linda S / OASIS

Beautiful white flower quilt. It is really interesting to see what other quilters do in other countries. Love all the quilts and we could never get tired of looking at pictures of quilts.

How wonderful! There are a lot of talented quilters in Sweden.

Do you have any pictures of yourself you can share?
