I love hearing all the different expressions, traditions & holidays other countries have. I also like to understand the reasons behind the traditions, expressions, & holidays. That is the most fun for me. It is like knowing the names of your ancestors, but then you dig a little deeper & you find out what they did for a living, where they lived, where they went to school, etc.

Kadie, it is like in the DVD--your 'wadding' is our 'batting'. I agree with the time thing. It is easier to know what end of the day you are on when it is 21:00 instead of 9PM. The date still confuses me & I have to remind myself what I am looking at. (one of my software programs does the day/month/year).

The metric system still throws me. The government tried to change us over when I was in HS & it didn't go. As long as I think only in metric I do fine. Just don't ask me to convert back & forth! :)

I love all you folks & would never intentionally hurt your feelings.

I'm with oasis, this is like a blank page that can be filled with anything and everything...:-)

And, yes, I too have been wondering about the vegemite stuff. In fact, I've wondered about it ever since the '80s, when there was a pop song called "Down under" (I think by a group called Men at Work) that had a line saying something like "...and I gave him a vegemite sandwich." Sounded very exotic to us Europeans, and the song was a huge hit here, but we never understood what it meant..:-)

I just sat down (with my breckie) to catch up on what's been happening while I've been sleeping and I am eating Vegemite on toast!!! while you're asking questions about it!!!
How do I explain vegemite!?! It has the look and consistancy of thick, black sump oil! It is made from concentrated yeast extract.It is NOTHING like Marmite or Promite.(I don't think it is very salty and I don't cook with salt or put it on anything) It does have a very strong flavour so you don't spread it on very thickly.
It is yummy spread on hot buttered toast for breakfast. You can make a hot drink out of it in Winter.Just put a teaspoon full in a cup of hot water.Or add a teaspoonful when making gravy.
It is nice with cheese on a sandwich or with just lettuce on a sandwich...that was one of my school lunches..lettuce and vegemite sandwiches! I don't know anyone who doesn't eat it.I even used to smear a little bit on my kids teething rusks!

I'm a little late reading this thread but the carved pumpkins are actually supposed to scare away any bad spirits that are lurking around on Halloween. It's supposedly a protection for your home, but mostly it's just fun!
