Quilt Detectives needed!

Post by Hummingbird » Thu Aug 30, 2007 10:07 am

Hi Ladies (and gents!)

I could use some help in identifying two different quilts. This first one was in my grandmother's belongings when we cleaned out her house. I paid the church ladies to hand quilt it for me several years ago. It's hand-pieced and I'm guessing from the 30's or 40's based on the fabrics. The bed it's laying on is a queen so it's a BIG quilt for it's age. I'm assuming it's some type of a Fan or Dish pattern but I'm not finding it.

This second one is actually a 'cheater cloth'. It's printed but hand quilted. I've had it for a very long time and I think it came from my grandmother as well. I have an email out to my mom to help with the ID. The main panel is actually only about 32" wide and the remaining 8" has been 'strip-pieced' to make it wider. Odd thing is, the flowers don't line up. They just sewed 'chunks' together and made the quilt wider.

Thanks for any help

Your 2nd quilt is a GrandMothers Flower Garden. The 1st one looks to be 1/2 of a Dresden Circle made to look like a fan in each block. Hopefully soemone else will chime in soon.

Hummingbird - I'm not too sure about the pattern but I am sure that I think the fan/dresden plate quilt is gorgeous. What a treasure!!! It's beautiful

Thank you for your help! I love the quilts too. We're not really sure if my grandmother did them or if one of her sisters or mother did any of it. Not much quilt history was kept apparently. Waaaa!

Hi Hummingbird,
I showed your photos to Eleanor and she said the first quilt is a Fan quilt that the quilter arranged in an unique way. She feels that the quilt was probably made closer to the 1940's due to the red fabrics.

The other quilt is definitely Grandmother's Flower Garden.

You are a lucky girl to have these family heirlooms, they are wonderful!

My quilt just got ID'd by Eleanor Burns!! I think I'm in a tizzy! Tell her THANK YOU SO MUCH! At least I know I was close on the 30's to 40's age. I didn't know about the reds. Thank you for that to add to my knowledge! I'll have to see if my mom can remember any more about it.

I just got an update from my mom. She said that the second quilt was from my Dad's side of the family. His mom passed away when he was 18 so I'm not too hopeful on much more info. I did email him though to see if he remembers anything. There is a slight possibility that his step-mom was a quilter but that doesn't ring a bell with what I know about her.

On with the search..... lol

Grandmother's Fan, Grandmothers Flower Garden, might have been made my a grandmother. What a find! My office mate said he just found a quilt that he believes may be 100 or more years old. Believes somebody in his family made it. I asked him to bring it so I could see it and that it could be dated somewhere on the quilt itself or the fabrics would date it.
