Paper piecing help
Every instruction I have had for paper piecing is a complete mystery to me. I want to try it but I am frustrated and confused. What goes where which side up all of it. Can anyone give me some simplified instructions for the foundationally challenged??

Re: Paper piecing help
Well, there was a mini class at guild. I made a block but .... Do you have enough scraps and patterns to play with? I know you put the first 2 pieces right sides together on line 1. Then turn it over and sew on the paper on line 1. Turn it over and open the fabric. The second piece should come to and cover line 2. Clear as mud, right?
Surly some one can explain it better.

Iowagal. . . It is kind of confusing. You just have to jump in and try it. You might try www.caroldoak.com. I have read a few different instructions and I think she has the best (and most understandable) directions. It is a good way to do a mariners compass. Someday I'll try it. . .when I have more patience. LOL
Hope this helps. It is hard to explain without pictures.

Re: Paper piecing help
I took an intro class on paper piecing and the instructor used Carol Doak's book. It had hearts on it. Practice with something small so you won't get frustrated. It's slow going at first until you get the hang of it.
If at all possible, go to a class on it. Or at least watch a video. I will try to find one on you-tube.

Okay, found some videos on HGTV:
http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/video_guide/
Upper left of screen type in "paper piecing" and a list of videos will pop up.
Hope this helps.

Re: Paper piecing help
Carol Doak has an excellent DVD showing hands on how to paper piece. I've taken many classes how to PP and her method fits all the different patterns. I enjoy ppiecing because I don't have to cut the fabric to an exact measurement. There are many views on what type of paper to use. I have tried them all and my favorite inexpensive paper is scribble paper for kids sold at Staples (Roselle Hands On Scribble Pad) in a three pack. I don't like to trace a pattern, I print it. This paper goes in the printer and tears off easy.

I know exactly how you feel Iowagal. I could not understand it for the longest time. Then I was lucky enough to take a class from Billie Louder and finally GOT IT!!! I never understood the directions in anything I looked at. I think for some people, like me, it takes a "hands on" approach with someone showing me step by step. Once you get it you will love it. It offers so many more options for your quilts.
